rhy7s: Would you consider shrinking your Linux installation partitions to dual boot or booting the Linux system on your second system from USB instead to be able to boot XP or 10 from the internal drive? You don't have any backup drives with you? Is PXE booting an option?

I would consider shrinking linux on spare for dual booting to Windows as a last resort, that never seems to go well for me which is why I have Win 10 on the original drive and Linux on a SSD on my daily use laptop. I still need an OS image for windows on the spare I assume. PXE not an option here unless I want to setup my own network between my two laptops, that would also mean both laptops have to be in the same place, most of the time they are 500m apart one in the "office" the other in my room at house.

ANglEAUT:

How about a spare laptop instead?

PS It'll help to know the make & model of your other laptop to get some drivers

Not sure if I want another spare laptop here, that is another option.

Current spare laptop is Compaq Presario V3500, AMD Turion 64 TL-58 1.9-GHz processors, 4GB RAM, Northbridge: nVidia MCP67M, integrated GeForce 7150M (nForce 630M) graphics. Not sure what else is needed. Apparently these originally came with Windows Vista, label is worn off so can't read version or codes. Thanks for your help.

Yeah, I know HP no longer supports hardware older that 10 years. That's why I like Linux, it makes old "unsupported" hardware useful again. I think I may just endup using XP under Virtualbox on the spare laptop. A friend has grabbed a copy of Tiny WinXP for me, might be a month or more before I see it unfortunately.
