oh my god i have to rewrite my whole post again because my dvd drive is a M A T S H I T A brand "bad word" spot on.

ANyway here I go again. I have a compaq v3000 notebook. I have this Mat s h i t a   UJ-850S dvd ram drive. Last time it had problems.. could not read or write cdr so i sent it back to compaq and they replaced it. Now it happened again n is outside warranty. Googled this issue and found thousands of people having the same problem. One solution was to delete upper and lower filters in the registry.

Only plays and writes DVD. not cd's!!

However, this wont work for me because there are no filters in the registry. (Yes i checked properly). So I desperately need another solution. Thats why Im here in need of your help. Somebody please help me!

forgot to mention i tried to reinstall the device and so on. still nothing. same results.

actually you are already doing the right thing in going to the registry to delete lower/upper filters, however, you have to uninstall optical drive key listed in the device manager then restart the pc, after rebooting, if there's an available firmware for the optical drive either from compaq website or from the internet then you have to update its firmware... try to double check also with compaq's website if there's an exisiting issue with burning software apps since sometimes it causes problems. also, if you have uninstalled iTunes, then it could definitely alter the registry settings on the system. lastly, if the problem still persists you might need to reinstall windows on the system.

hit me back if the solution won't fix the issue.

hey borgy. thanks alot for the advice. however, i tried to look for the drivers online or perhaps firmware. Could not find a single thing. I found some older firmware for the same device but for sony vaio, and they dont work for mine. So i reformatted my laptop once more, and I still have the same problem. I dont think its anything with the OS, ad it was having problems on xp and now same for vista. The upperlower case filters are still not in the registry so they dont exist.

Its a really weird problem when DVD's work, but cd-r's dont. Completely fed up with this crappy hardware. What do u reckon I should do?
