Batman:
one thing i struggle with windows 10 is that there are layers of windows 7 style settings and options buried under layers of windows 8 style settings and options and going into them opens an endless loop of mickey mouse egg hunt.
does windows 11 fix this?
@rhy7s:
@elpenguino: I haven't played with win 11 so question for the thread. Does win 11 come with that annoying feature (to me) of W10 , namely, scroll bars that require a hover before they become active or full size?
Under Display in the Ease of Access settings you can disable ‘Automatically hide scroll bars in Windows’ for Windows that use the native controls.
Thanks. I couldn't find this at all the way you described it but if you go to Accessibility | Visual Effects there's an option "Always show scrollbars" there.
It didn't change the behaviour in Outlook (note the scrollbar in the Move dialog before and after hovering the mouse cursor - and yes, restarted Outlook, restarted computer all to the same result):

Not if both control panel & "settings" are both still there .
So, not really a new OS, just a major re-tweek ?
"minor reskin"

Having both of those *still* is puzzling. I can imagine time for transition being required but that has been the situation for *years*.
it may look like a re-tweak but I can't imagine a company spending gazzilions and making all this fuss just for a re-skin.

Awesome - thanks for the tip.

raises the question, when is an OS truly a new version .
The next version of win usually seems more of a tweak than a completely new version , they have far too much in common.
eg Vista & Win7 , Win8 & Win10 , Win10 & Win11 ?

When it's a new version.
There has been no version bump, it's still Windows 10.0. This indicates there has been no breaking changes to the driver model etc., so it's not really a new version at all.
Calling it Windows 11 allows them to make changes which might otherwise annoy customers, such as removing x86 support (about time!) and experimenting with a new GUI (which will almost certainly revert back to something more like it was in the next iteration).
Dratsab: I've been running at on my main computer at home for just over a month now. Stable and fast but, like djtOtago, the lack of ability to drop files onto a running app minimised to the taskbar does irk me. That's a really basic function that needs to be in place as far as I'm concerned. Windows upgrades should be about increasing functionality not decreasing it (I know, I know...).

I spoke too soon. An 'update' has just occurred which has really screwed my system. Nothing whatsoever loads on the Taskbar. Trying to use the windows key to run stuff via keyboard shortcuts doesn't work. Attempting to load windows update (I already had a shortcut on my desktop) pops up an error after about 2 mins. Right clicking on the desktop appears unresponsive but does work, again with a couple of minutes delay.
shrub: Same here. To fix. Ctl Shift Esc. Run New Task. Control. Date Time change to +1 day. Disable Time sync then reboot.
Cheers for that handy little fix! I was going to run SFC and DISM so this has saved a heap of time 👍
After changing the date and disabling time sync, I experimented with simply restarting Windows Explorer (right clicked on it in Task Manager and selected Restart) and that's done the job :-)
Microsoft have released a fix for this. This would be my first major issue with an insider build in quite a while.
- Step 1: Use CTRL-ALT-DEL and choose to open Task Manager.
- Step 2: Choose “More details” at the bottom of Task Manager to expand Task Manager.
- Step 3: Go to “File” and choose “Run new task”.
- Step 4: Type “cmd” in the “Open” field.
- Step 5: Paste the following: reg delete HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\IrisService /f && shutdown -r -t 0
- Step 6: Hit enter, and then your PC should reboot. After rebooting, everything should be back to normal.
Right so I have been using windows 11 for near on 2 months and to be fair I'm not impressed. Its just windows 10 with a new skin that makes doing tasks harder.
The taskbar is hopeless. I use multiple spreadsheets and its just a pain to navigate when they are all compressed. I have a 1440p screen and it feels like 90% of the bottom is useless. Why do I now have to hit start then click(a tiny box) again for all apps?
Having control panel and settings still - Just Why?
The only thing I've found that works better is HEIC format files.

I pity the fool that still buys a laptop with a screen resolution of 1024*768 in 2021.
IMO, MS have been wasting screen space for a long, long time.
Besides all the other minor places that I've come across in the last 20 years.

- See the Ribbon in MS Office
That's why I switched to OpenOffice and later LibreOffice. I had to help someone with editing a Word document a few days ago, and it was a nightmare trying to find anything on that ribbon, even using the search option. The old menu was more compact and easier to use IMO.
