If its a flash drive you can't do wrong with ChipGenius it shows the real size of a flash drive.

Do you have a link to said drive that you purchased? That would help with determining what's going on here - although it does sound like it's a fake one.

Its fake, stop playing with partitioning it and make it a single partition, and run h2testw across it and figure out if you have a 8 or 16 gig drive that is dressed up, then start the dispute process on aliexpress with the screenshots from the software. Hopefully it is not too late for that.

You do not have a 16TB drive. Flash chips are not made in china, they do not get good prices on legitimate ones to make them any cheaper there, the real manufacturers have their supplies locked up tight so there is no third shift making them. The only usable flash on Aliexpress is really old and slow stuff, or things you are paying near to the same price as amazon for.

Mystery solved!!! Inspired by your posts I did some checking and decided to try and open the damn thing. With a big of elbow crease and persistence I got it open and have enclosed pictures of the result. I have opened a dispute and sent them these photos as proof. Thanks guy for your help and I really appreciate all your replies. Embarrassing for me of course - I thought I knew stuff!! LOL it's scary how easily they can fool an entire operating system and every major partition software application that I tried. Cheers everyone 👍 The silver piece is just a lump of metal glued in there to give it weight!!! The b@st@rds thought of everything 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬

The scam is still alive and well! Good thing you caught it now before you dumped any meaningful data on it. I'd also hate to think how slow that drive will be!

Here's a video of fake SSD scams and how to spot them which may come in handy for some people in the future:

Well I really got screwed with this purchase. I asked the seller for a refund - they refused. They are still insisting their product is genuine and sent me a video on how to set it up with Disk Management!!! I opened up a Paypal dispute - they refused to refund me because I won't send the item back to the seller. I tried my bank and they won't help either unless I send the item back to the seller. So that's a $54 lesson on why to not shop with Ali Express. I spent over an hour online in their chat function - just going over and over the same thing but getting bullshit back from the customer service rep.

Oh yeah - I forgot to mention that the fake drive is now bricked. I don't know how I did it, but I can't even access it to clean it with Diskpart anymore. So it's in the bin now.

Lesson learned there, just a shame it was the hard way 🙁 this is why getting something like a hard drive is best done locally.

Why won't you send it back, btw? It's obviously not what you paid for. Can you reassemble it and return it?

sugarpie: So that's a $54 lesson on why to not shop with Ali Express.

$54 for a drive of that size should've set off alarm bells in the first place.

But you can't trust AliExpress and its reviews. I bought something and received the wrong product. They offered to replace it in exchange for a 5-star review. I wasn't going to give a 5-star review for sending the wrong product, and then they told me they'd sent a replacement, didn't, and dragged things out until after the claim period.

Don't trust 5-star reviews, as many of them are probably 'bought' by the sellers like this.

They know the return rates for overseas are likely to end in non returnable. And often count on it

When you're buying for something in the 10-30 bracket and return rates are like this.... (25 from post shop)
