Note, it says they get access to free MS office (but sounds like you have to sort it yourself once you get a student ID).

I'd take the those requirements with a truckload of salt, given QuickTime, Shockwave, & Netbooks were discontinued years ago.

And two devices required? Come on.....(well perhaps, if purchasing from large retail stores).

Yea I saw those questionable requirements as well. My assumption was it hasn't fully been kept up to date. 2 devices sounds reasonable for some kids if there are hard on there tech but it's written as an advisory rather than a requirement which is a nice call out In my opinion.

Patch my pc mentioned earlier is exactly what I'm looking for - something to provide some assistive guide rails but not be overly difficult to manage.

There's nothing stopping the student from wiping and reinstalling - other than skill and the desire to do so. Wiping a pc is a very intentional action, what I'm trying to guard against are unintentional actions.

Starting to feel like you should refer your extended family member to this thread so they can make a call as to whether they really want you managing all this. With due respect, this thread shows you're unprepared for the responsibility, unaware of contemporary BYOD management practices, and by extension I can only assume you're not up to speed with the actual risks that need to be managed. This is a very "less is more" space these days, and must be led by the requirements of the school. Every additional unnecessary control risks the device being a frustrating experience for the student. That's not great when the tech is supposed to support and enhance their learning, not place obstructions in the way of it.
