shayshaysster: Have got pro sticker, and pro is what is installed. IBM said that they could sell me recovery disk for $82.50 which would sort the issue out.

In that case, try the windows key changer here.

http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/selfhelp/pkuinstructions.aspx

Should sort it out without having to by a disk or reinstall (assuming that the install has not been hacked with to get it going).

It will be XP Retail installed (or generic OEM) whereas the COF will related to an IBM OEM which have differnt PIDs and keys are therefore not interchangable.

You may be able to get around it with editors.. but it could also break windows.

I've managed to change the key for a corporate install to a valid licence using the Microsoft Keychanger tool, using the toshiba oem coa on the bottom of a laptop. It's worth giving it a go, I'm pretty sure the tool would advise if it can't change it, in which case, no harm should be done.
