mattwnz: The guy discussing it with the woman was just like one of those advertorials. They have largely copied apples keynote with the guy in his mono toned v-neck vs steves turtleneck.

Nice trolling attempt... While it seems you don't have anything to say about the software specifically there's always some clothing style comparison to do.

On topic please.

So, guys...

What is it like? Seems a little odd to me to have an OS that is smartphone/tablet capable, also on a desktop/laptop environment. Will Windows 8 carry out the more demanding tasks such as gaming/video editing, etc?

I am assuming its more a look and feel, and that everything will be as normal otherwise?

I dont know how it is going to come across on a non touch desktop. This seems to be the same criticism laid with Lion, that it is an IOS crossover for tablets on the desktop.
From what I have seen, Windows 8 looks refreshingly different and really exciting, but you can go back to a regular looking, faster windows 7 type shell if you want to. I will wait and see how the immersive overlay performs with no touch interface before upgrading my copy of Win7.

Its fine for gaming; managed to run steam, bc2 and portal from my W7 install fine. gonna test out fps on bc2 later on between the two, w7 is running catalyst 11.6 64bit while w8 is 11.8 32bit so results might be a bit messed up bit ill see what happens anyway

You still have your standard desktop, metro ui feature is more like a new take on the desktop + start menu  aspects

Sweet I'll load it up on my Hyper-v box this weekend and have a play. Really looking forward to having a hypervisor in the client as well - will be great at work.

Hi (yes, I'm new...hello)

I downloaded the 64bit ISO and it seems to run on VirtualBox fine. The only thing I can't get to work is the guest additions as it won't recognise the windows version to install. I do create VHD disc's in VirtualBox if that makes any difference. This is just so I can move VM's to my Hyper-V box if required.

I haven't played with Windows 8 for long, but it's......weird... when you're used to Windows 7.

I'm not sure if I should laugh or cry. Perhaps I should keep playing.

It won't run under Hyper-V, VMWare, or Virtual PC - comes up HAL_INITIALIZATION_FAILED (with a sad emoticon) and refuses to continue.

I understand that is runs okay on VMware Workstation 8.0, but not the older versions.

dclegg: But thats a lot better than I get with Fusion, which won't even install it. Any attempt is met with this error.

I haven't tried this myself yet, but apparently you can fix this in Settings > Advanced > Other > Preferred virtualisation engine > Intel VT-x.

Edit: Doesn't work.

Nope, its just purely down to V/box not recognising Win8 yet - probably is some way to get it to work.
Otherwise, seems to run quite happily in V/box :)

If you turn off the Tile UI to go back to the classic version, how similar is that to W7?
