Alright, so I am a freshman in college majoring in Computer Science and I have a problem with my computer that has been driving me insane for the last 3 days.  I have asked all my teachers what to do and they don't know.  I asked the computer help desk what to do, and none of them know what to do.  So far, I have not been able to find any help online either.

Here is the error message I get:
The system DLL kernel32.dll was relocated in memory.  The application will not run properly.  The relocation occurred because the DLL C:\WINDOWS\system32\KERNEL32.dl occupied an address range reserved for Windows system DLLs.  The vendor supplying the DLL should be contacted for a new DLL.

I get this error message anytim something calls ntvdm.exe.
Ex.,, etc.

Ad-Aware.exe and putty.exe also generate this message.

Three days before getting this message, I installed BearShare and downloaded putty.exe.  I didn't have any problems with BearShare, but I uninstalled it since its installation was so close to the arrival of my error message.  putty.exe ran just fine the first time, but two days later when I ran it for the second time, it generated that message.  So, I deleted putty.exe as well.

I don't know what to do.  If you know how to fix this or you have any ideas at all, I would greatly appreciate it.  If you have any questions or need more information, you can e-mail me at

I would treat this computer as compromised, and completely reinstall Windows. And after that install a good anti-virus program.

I will not go into the why you installed BearShare or another file sharing program, but if you don't have a good anti-virus and anty-spiware programs, then it's calling for trouble.

That's just it.  I do not think it was a virus.  I had zero viruses before the problem and have zero after.  I have Norton Antivirus and McAffee antivirus.  I also use Ad-aware (when it worked) as well as SpybotSE.  Anyway, thanks for replying.

If you're using windows Xp and you had system restore turned on, you could restore your computer to a point before you had the problems. It might not work, but it's worth a try. It would be a good idea in future to set a restore point as well before installing anything you think is dodgy

Isn't Windows great! :-)

I'd say your best bet is to copy off all your important files to somewhere other than on your computer (DVD, other computer on the network, removeable hard disk. Then let boot from your Windows CD and let it attempt a repair ... once in a blue moon the repair does work.

If the repair fails, then just re-install Windows (reformat) and suffer through 2 days worth of visiting

Sorry, but computers are evil and will put you through this sort of rubbish, Windows is horribly prone to it, Linux and OSX not so much (but not immune either).

As to the culprit ? I'd say BearShare (WTF you downloading and running that for ?!?!), Putty is reputable ... or it could be any number of other dodgy software you downloaded :-)

I'll give you a tip for a sane life though .. don't get into IT as a job! Find a job more fun!

hehehe .. just read the part where you said you asked your teachers and help desk!  Teachers are all theory at university and don't know much apart from that and a universities IT help Desk is populated by ... welll .. by the "not-so-skilled" IT people :-)

Hey Mark.  Thanks.

I don't know why I downloaded BearShare.  A friend said he used it and had no problems, so I gave it a try.  Never again.  Other than that, I didn't install anything.  Anyway, ya.  I'm just going to wait untill this coming summer and re-load the machine.  I think I can survive untill then.  Thanks for all your help everyone.
