I know that I can migrate firefox and thunderbird from one windows machine to another by copy the local application data from one machine to another.

That works very well. With firefox, you get the same bookmarks, saved passwords, history, pre-filled forms etc. With thunderbird, you get all of the accounts and messages moved over.

Can the same be done with a move from Windows to Linux?

there is a program called mozilla backup, but I'm not too sure if it will allow the transfer between platforms.

First you need to locate your windoze profile under documents and settings, then copy it's contents to your linux home directory under .mozilla/Firefox/ You will need to allow viewing of hidden files in your nix file browser to see this directory (CTRL+H)

It's a dierct copy and paste if you know the directory (nix calls folders directories) structure. Gluck
