Topic # 228813 23-Jan-2018 18:51

This is one of the silliest bugs that has been around since Ubuntu 12.04 maybe longer.    Let's say a person using Windows decides to set up a dual boot system.    The installer is very slick and gives the option of install alongside Windows & then a few screens on offers the option to encrypt the home directory.    It is the same screen where a person puts in their user name and password.     All goes well until you get the message 'Creating User' & there it will hang forever.    What you are meant to do as a workaround is to create another user after the install & choose 'encrypt home directory' for the new user.

As it is a well known bug why doesn't Canonical just fix the bug or completely remove the option of encrypting the home directory on install?    They put all this effort at producing a very slick installer including a really nice screen where you can use a slider to allocate disk space for Windows and Ubuntu & then screw it up with this bug that has been around for years.    I have just installed Linux Lite and provided you don't tick that damned box the install is brilliant quick and easy.    (I'm not blaming the Linux Lite guys - it may be something they cannot change.)

For a new user it is highly likely they will at least consider ticking that damn box to encrypt the home directory.    How amazingly dumb when you have a chance to woo another Windows user to Linux.    It is things like this that never get fixed that have caused Linux to never get beyond maybe 1% to 3% share of the desktop operating systems.

It only happens on dual boot?

Not sure whether it only happens on dual boot.   If you Google the issue most people seem to talking about dual boot.

I had a quick look around. Which version are you installing? Some work has been performed:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ecryptfs/+bug/1670336

There are several other sources to check to determine the current status and perhaps some investigation if aspects of the fix has not been merged. This could be your opportunity to contribute : )

Edit: assuming it's the same issue.

I was installing the 64 bit version of Linux Lite from an iso a downloaded two days ago.

Thanks I had a look at that thread.    I don't have the level of knowledge to contribute to that thread!    All the installers seem to work perfectly if no encryption or full disk encryption is chosen.    It's only the home directory thing that seems to be the issue.

I'm running Ubuntu 17.10 and have an encrypted drive on a dual boot system - no issues with me?
