Hi,

Have a asus mb with built in ATI HD4200 graphics card.  Have being playing movies on the pc.
Have linked the pc hdmi out to tv hdmi in.  I only get a picture untill os starts booting up then it goes blank.

Pc can detect the Sony tv, but the TV says no Hdmi devices detected.  Is this a resolution issue. Have checked
on Ubuntu forums to no avail.  The ati 4200, is fully 3D compatable with the propriety drivers installed.

Have seen similar posts on ubuntu forums but no one seems to be answering them.

Cheers

Well, got rid of the recommended drivers, after restart failed to boot. Booted through grub, installed different drivers. Would only restart to terminal. Third restart and it has magically appeared on my TV, so not sure what i did or how stable it is but problem sort of solved.

Well not stable yet, its very hit and miss, sometimes it goes and sometimes it does not. Movies playing on the pc fine, but the tv will suddenly go blank. Its very annoying, i have got to enter sudo password every time i want to change display setting on the Ati catalyst control centre.

ATI Driver right? ATI blob driver (aka restricted), while giving some good 3D always causes issues with HDMI audio, instead use the open source ati driver and you will find that the audio works through hdmi.

Instead use software processing for video e.g. I use xbmc myself and it works just fine on software rendering with a now old phenom cpu.

tried sudo apt-get install xbmc xbmc-standalone but after following several forum threads, still cant install due to a broken package.

.
Could this be due to the ati/amd proprietary FGLRX driver..

from console:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:team-xbmc
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install xbmc
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

driver shouldn't affect the install..

Hi thanks for the reply.

Have already tried through terminal, after it failed due to broken packages, i checked on synaptic to see which packages were broken. Followed a few forum threads ( [SOLVED] How to install XBMC in Ubuntu 10.10) http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1596133 changing software sources to lucid etc, but still no luck.

I can only open the package manager through terminal as well, through the system menu i get this (Failed to execute child process "gksu" (No such file or directory) so i think the problem could be solved with a fresh install.
