Hi folks well the new macOS 10.15 Catalina has arrived.

This is a huge update to the macOS. It's biggest change is that 32 bit Apps are no longer supported, they just will not work. I have one tiny worry concerning this and that is my Brother MFC 9340 CDW printer and Garmin GPS has 32 bit components with no updates on their respective websites as of writing. So I will be holding off till next week to update plus as what just happened with iOS 13, there maybe a flurry of minor updates within 10 days.

Anyway here are some of the majors changes:

  1. iTunes has been split into 3 separate Apps - Music, Podcasts & TV
  2. iOS Device management is now being handling by Finder
  3. Accessing your Apple ID is now done through a new profile setting in System Preferences.
  4. A new Photos interface surfaces your best photos organised by day, month, or year.
  5. There's a new start page in Safari.
  6. Mail has new tools for muting email threads and blocking senders.
  7. The Reminders app has been overhauled.
  8. Security has been enhanced in macOS Catalina and Gatekeeper, Apple's security protocol, checks all of your apps for known security issues.
  9. New data protections require apps to get your permission before accessing your documents.
  10. A new Sidecar feature lets you turn your iPad into a secondary display for your Mac with just the click of a button, and you can even use your Apple Pencil to turn the iPad into a drawing tablet when using apps like Photoshop and Illustrator.
  11. With macOS Catalina, the Apple Watch can be used to approve security prompts for passwords, and Macs with a T2 chip now support Activation Lock, making them more secure.
  12. A new Find My app is available on the Mac for the first time, and it lets you track your devices even when they're offline, or in the case of notebooks, closed.
  13. Screen Time becomes available on the Mac.
  14. Support for Apple Arcade, Apple's new subscription-based gaming service.

Anyway for a complete list of the changes check this MacRumours article out: What's New in macOS Catalina

Good luck with the update.

I am upgrading a 27" iMac and it has been sitting on the "Setting up your mac..." screen for several hours.

Edit; after another hour I forced a restart of the iMac and all finished OK.

All would seem to be going great. I like the new Apps and its very pleasing to no longer see the itunes icon. Photos takes quite a long time to sort out all the photos but when done it is good. The new desktop wallpapers are somewhat drab for my taste. I wont get to use sidecar until I update my iPad. All in all though its a good update.

Does this mean that it creates a new Photo Library file like it did with iPhoto -

iPhoto Library.photolibrary changed to Photos Library.photoslibrary

I don't believe your device supports Sidecar. I believe it's only the models with the new butterfly keyboards.

I have started this upgrade process on  my 27” iMac by creating a bootable Mojave partition on an external hard drive (from USB stick) and move all my apps to it.  When I find apps which work OK on Catalina I can delete from my external drive and keep what won’t work, MS word & Excel anyone, as I will not pay ongoing subscriptions.  I use Libra Office where I can but I have a few old files which probably won’t convert.

Of course back up everything before upgrading. 😇

Reading the extensive (13 pages) of Ars Technica’s review of Catalina, I note you can check which Apps are still 32 bit in System Information in Mojave. 😀

WINE                    32 Bit App, 64 bit version flakey but is unlikely to work with 10.15 due to design issues. No Apps that rely on WINE will work, I will try DOSBox and Linux VirtualBox              Version 6.0.12 runs with Linux Mint installed

Apps that I say "Work", they start and a few basic things were tested on them, no extensive testing has been done, where I say "starts" I just started it and quit, these Apps are not a priority (yet) so did not bother too much with them. I hope by the time I need them there will be updates available.

Hope this helps someone.

I only had one application that had to be removed a game I had forgotten was even there. Everything else is working great.
