The SSD performance on the 256Gb variant is a huge disappointment, but I wouldn't be too concerned about the thermal management issue. Most of these tests are being done using tasks that noone would realistically buy a Macbook Air for - if you want to do intensive video editing then buy a 14" with an M1 Pro or Max.

I had an order pending for a new M2 Air, which I'd upgraded to 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD (because I suspected the 256GB would be slower, which it appears to be), but a few days ago found that JB Hi-Fi have the base 14" MacBook Pro (also with 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD) on sale for $3059 - only a few hundred more than the equivalent Air that I'd ordered, so it was a no-brainer for me to just get that instead.

The Pro is bulkier and not suited for everyone, but I'm pretty happy with it - the nicer display and speakers than the Air are a bonus!

Ok so we are buying a new MacBook this weekend probably… I have done a fair bit of research and JB Hi-Fi just happen to have a special on MacBooks….

We’re probably (98% sure) getting a MacBook Pro with 512SSD

So my main question is – how do we transfer the data over from the existing MacBook to the new one?

When my wife upgraded her iPhone last year all she had to do was put the new phone next to the old one, enter in the passcode and it automatically transferred the data / apps and everything to the new phone. However with the existing MacBook being 2012 I’m not sure if that process will work? – someone can correct me if I am wrong.

I do have an external hard drive (brand new) and I can always transfer our files / folders on to it, then plug it into the new MacBook and install them on there – unless there is an easier way?

I’ll also probably have to set up the e-mail server (Vodafone) on the new MacBook… I have many ‘saved’ e-mails / e-mail folders on the current MacBook…. Can these be transferred over to the new MacBook somehow?

Any advice would be appreciated

Move your content to a new Mac

Use Migration Assistant to copy all of your documents, apps, user accounts, and settings to a new Mac from another computer.

Prior to moving your data from your old mac, go through and delete app's and doc's you no longer use or need.

There is also one other thing you can do and that is to use, what I call a "Grease & Oil Change" maintenance program called Onyx. This is a FREE program that is a multifunction utility that you can use to verify the structure of the system files, to run miscellaneous maintenance and cleaning tasks, to configure parameters in the Finder, Dock, Safari, and some of Apple's applications, to delete caches, to remove certain problematic folders and files, to rebuild various databases and indexes, and more. I always use it prior and post system OS updates and about once a month.

So in your case use it on your old machine prior to Migration then on your new machine post Migration.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

So we got the MacBook Pro in the weekend... I spent a couple of hours going through all the files on the old MacBook and deleting files.... can't believe I had kept job application letters and other stuff from 2012/2013! I deleted heaps of files and unwanted stuff.

One thing I didn't realise was the new MacBook has 2 ports on the side, but one of those is actually used to plug in the charging cable for the MacBook so that only leaves 1 port free

Then I realised when setting it up that they are not actual standard USB plugs.... the salesman at JB Hi-Fi did ask if I needed anything extra like MS Office or a USB extender thing and I said no thanks.... so I'll go back there today and get a simple USB Extender thing.... they have plenty there form about $40 upwards

I'm not sure yet whether to get a new cable for the monitor at the same time, or whether to wait and get a new monitor completely - as our monitor is quite old (about 2008?)

But in saying that, the graphics / screen on the new MacBook are supposed to be amazing, so I might just use a monitor stand and have the MacBook at eye level, then decide if I really need a monitor.

I did struggle initially with transferring the data over at first, but it turned out to be all ok..... I did it at 9pm last night thinking it would be a fairly straight forward (quick) procedure, but once it was all set up to go, the message same on the screen that there was 11 hours, 37 minutes to go... I thought what the?!?!?! but that quickly shortened to 10hrs, then 8, then 5 then 2hrs 15min, so I left it running overnight. then this morning just had to click a couple of things and it all looks fine... even transferred the desktop picture over and the screen looks like a mirror image of the old MacBook.
