Oh yeah, and the guy that bought something and I freighted it away. (Personally that's the end of it for me and I provide the tracking number, IF they request that type of shipping. If it gets lost etc, that's your problem to chase up as you bought something you couldn't pick up in person...)

Get an email later saying it didn't turn up and he's very annoyed etc. I looked online with the tracking number and it says it was delivered. Turns out though he's not even in the country, so how he determined it wasn't delivered it I don't know. Long story but when he's back in NZ he finds the docket and goes and collects from the depot/asks for a redeliver and it's all sweet.

Sitting in Red Face trademe feedback land during all of this until he finally finds it. Personally I don't agree that the buyer should be the only one that can comment...

I've remembered another trade where I was the buyer of something for $5. I paid through online banking and accidentally paid $50 (possibly thanks to autocomplete). I didn't even notice, but the seller let me know and happily refunded the $45 :)

I once sold a router on Trademe, the guy came around to our place to collect it and my flatmate handed it over - he bought it for $30, gave him a $50 note and was told to keep the change. There are some good people out there.

A nice person story is I sold my old Xbox about a month or so ago. I forgot to check the dvd tray for anything when I sent and I left a dvd in there. The guy sent me an email when it arrived that he found the dvd and what is my address. Sent it back and didn't ask for anything in return. Yes trademe has the stupid people but there is also a fair share of honest good people.

Why can't TM synchronize feedback so that no one gets to view responses until both buyer and sellar have posted them?

Best trade: $750 for a Sony stereo I'd bought for $1k 10 years prior because someone wanted a black stereo.

Just got an email today:

I want to ask a question on your site but wouldnt have a clue how too. My question is...Is there anyway to unlock an iPhone 4s that has had the IMEI number blocked by the carrier (telecom). I purchased it from trademe only to find out when I went to buy a micro sim for it that the freaking thing was blocked, telecom have told me that the previous owner had it on a contract and that if I was to pay the bill of $479 that they could unblock it not taking into account that I have just paid $925 for the phone. Please help me

Hmmm. Sorry sir, you have been scammed.

My sister tried selling books once, the questions flooded her e-mail with all the usual stuff about shipping and courier and signed delivery etc. But one e-mail in particular cracked me up when the bidder asked her verify that there're no missing or stained pages and wants proof....

Yeah bummer. There's always the possibility the seller did not really know what they were doing and might rectify the situation when contacted. Given they are obviously in debt, that would have to be done quickly.

For the IMEI to be locked it is probably some time since the seller stopped paying the bills... I'd say he knew exactly what he was doing.

If the seller does nothing to settle the debt quickly (with the $925 in their pocket) I presume the buyer is legally obliged to return the phone to Telecom if it is their property. I assume telcos only do this to contract phones.

This is a very interesting scenario. I would think that technically the telco would have no claim to the handset on the basis that it would not act as security on any debt, with the unpaid contract break fee being an unsecured debt.

That would be correct IMO, of course they are under no obligation to allow unpaid-for merchandise to be used on their network.

Oh well, can always take it to 2degrees, who apparently don't think the IMEI blacklist is worth subscribing to (haven for thieves!)

It doesn't seem that they are making a claim on the handset, they're just declining service to that device. It's semantic but a bit different than registering a property security.
