I'm for putting a castrating agent in the water and then requiring certification to get 12 months worth of antidote from the government to have children.

My wife is a Doctor and has worked at Starship quite a lot, she says the things she saw when she worked there would break your heart. Not as much the abuse which tends to be relatively small numbers, but the neglect or lack of caring.

You and I might have differing points of view and opinions on other topics, but I am totally with you on this!

It seems that we currently have a society where the uneducated and unmotivated breed lots and lots, and the well educated and motivated breed very little... The future scares the hell outta me!!

keewee: Interestingly I spoke to my great great grandfather before he died recently, and we were talking about how bad the future was looking and he said something of interest to me. He said that in his 95 years people had always been saying the same things about how bad the future looked, but ultimately it was just different and that problems are still just problems.

I am not saying that the future doesn't have some scary stuff in it, but the world will continue to turn and people will continue to evolve.

riahon: You can complain to freitasm. I stand by my comment.

The whole thing about darwin awards , is that people take their genes out of the gene pool.

Taking a blood relative out is also removing their own genes, but somewhat less efficiently.

I still don't see why you would call me idiotic for making such an observation.

Surfisup1000 is correct. A candidate is ineligible for a Darwin award if in killing themself they also kill a bystander who would otherwise have contributed in a positive way to the human gene pool. If they kill someone in the same gene pool e.g. their offspring as well as themself, then they are eligible for the award.

Of course this is disputed by creationists who do not recognise the existance of evolution.

It will always be an issue... everywhere.
For some of those affected we fortunately live in a welfare oriented state where we're all too eager to absolve folk of their responsibilities thru touchy feely programs and a bit of $$. In many countries where there is overcrowding and poverty and abuse, much of it simply goes unreported.... and we're left looking like the bad guys.

Is that because we have iphones and SUV's and drop our kids off at school with a can of coke......

I think the phrase; "Oh, the youth of today... the future is doomed" may not have been the first thing humans actually said. It was probably something like 'I'm hungry, what's for lunch?'. But it was probably in the first ten and there are documented cases from ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome with just this kind of complaint.

Surprisingly, we are still here and by most measures such as infant mortality and age of people when they die things are getting better.

Having said that... There is a big sociological shift from children being an economic asset in pre-industrial societies to being a liability in post-industrial society. We now have probably three generations of kids growing up like this. So, they take everything for granted.

OK, how do we stop/discourage the stupid to breed?

I think you nailed that description nicely. Stopping the stupid from breeding is a difficult one, but essentially removing the incentive/pay off would be a good start.

Tax having children instead of subsidising... Well, that may be a bit far, but just not subsidising would be a good start.

To be honest I think the topic title and reaction is a little over the top. People have accidents or make mistakes, that Mum will most likely have had her shock ;-)

If you're being honest to yourself we have all done something stupid, maybe even more than once.

Ha ha. I do get the impression that many geekzoners are absolutely perfect and do everything correctly and are also rather eager to chastise those who deviate from their own perfection.
