networkn: I get the impression he feels TC is the wrong choice but he has no say.

Really? I've seen a couple of quotes that seem to defend the casting decision, if not actually endorse Tom. Something along the lines of Reacher's size being a metaphor for an unstoppable force and that Tom portrays this in his own way. Also, that it would be impossible to find a suitable actor to play the giant Reacher and that it is impossible to recreate the feel of the book on the big screen, but Cruise had the talent to make an effective Reacher. Maybe he is obliged to say things like that, but I don't get that feeling.

I have read that as well, perhaps more recently, though my personal interactions with him didn't indicate that. Perhaps we was told to stfu and accept his royalty cheques.

I would argue with you that a smaller physical specimen will be able to adequately convey force as well with the way LC has written JR interactions, with his size being the vast majority of his "stopping" power.

Take the Robert Crais protagonist Joe Pike for example, completely different build, but likely TC could play that guy convincingly as his size is not as much what makes him lethal.

I believe someone who watched the movie without the books may find TC an acceptable actor, most people who have read most/all of the novels like me, will likely find a disconnect which will be distracting.

Mostly it's symantics anyway, it's cast.

I think it could be done. Like the little bouncer who looks a lot tougher somehow than the big bouncer with the tattoos and "I'll take you on" attitude. You don't have to be big to be im

I just don't see TC pulling it off.

This is partly because, particularly recently, when TC plays a character I see him not the character. This is kind of OK in Mission Impossible but with Reacher we know the character. TC has good points and bad points but I don't think he can 'become' Reacher.

Just my two cents.

Didn't anybody tell you I was a hacker?

I think TC plays action characters really well, he played a blond assassin in a movie I can't recall the name of and I thought he was badass, and in IM he really does that well, but you can't fake physically large.

You can try. Temuera Morrison (5'7") in the flesh looks nothing like "Jake the Muss"

The movie you were thinking of was Collateral with Jamie Fox.

TC may have pulled of being in the military as an actor when he was younger but I just don't see it now. Reacher, apart from the obvious physical differences, to me has a rough around the edges quality that I just don't see TC pulling off.

Also I feel that even though the books were great, turning them into a movie without making them feel like a bad Jean Claude Van Dam, Steven Segal, or Dolph Lundren movie may be tough.
I'm surprised no one has mentioned Chuck Norris should've played him Laughing. I would have preferred Jason Stratham or even Russell Crowe cast rather than TC. Well to be honest I would've even preferred Peter Dinklage to play Reacher over Tom Cruise.

Well who knows he might be great. But it's like watching those making of interviews where all the actors say the director is the best they have ever worked with and the movie is the highlight of their careers and the director says the lead actor is just perfect for the role. Cast and crew interviews are always like that even when the movie is 100% fail.

Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher - yuck! 5'7" pretending to be 6'5' of unstoppable force might, perhaps, work if the actor was convincing enough to pull you into the story properly. But Tom Cruise always plays Tom Cruise. He will race sporty red cars (which Reacher never did - his driving skills are bad and he has never had a driver's license, although he can do a car chase along a straight road), and ogle pretty ladies. Women will find him irresistible and he will look into the screen from lowered brows to indicate that he is trying to look devilish and charismatic.

Movie rights were apparently sold 15 years ago. Nobody chose TC for the role except for TC himself - maybe its part of his marketing ploy so he can show off some abs again & pretend he is not on the fast run to becoming an old man.

Guess you realise I won't be watching the movie. I'd rather keep my minds image of Reacher so the next novels don't get contaminated by images of Tom Cruise. He ain't Reacher that's for damn sure.

Ok so i've not heard of Jack Reacher before and I'd have to agree if the character was supposed to be a foot taller then Cruise's actual height then I would be annoyed at the casting of Cruise too. However TC is a good actor and he is more than capable of playing a badass type fight a lot type of guy. He has played many roles where he has played this kind of character.

It wasn't that long ago people were complaining that Adrian Brody was cast in Predators a role fleshed out by Schwarznegger of course he was not playing his character and they argued that you would most likely see Brody's physique in the army over Arnie's.

I will see this movie one way or another but I think they probably could have put someone bigger in a role for a character of JR's size.

I'm also disappointed they never cast Denzel Washington as the lead of Alex Cross first it was Morgan Freeman and now someone else playing a guy I always saw Denzel playing. Maybe I need to get 100 million together to make it happen the way I saw it going down otherwise I will just get over it see it like anyone else who has read the books and really enjoyed them has (pretty much like most JR fans will).

Another odd thing with TC as JR though is that if there is 16 books already why would you not at least choose someone who could see out making at least half that number as if the movies a huge success (Box Office wise as lets be honest no one cares if it's a terrible version if it makes 100's of millions then a sequel will be made) as that is something I could not see TC doing here either by JR 5 or 6 TC will definitely be well over his use by date for a action badass.

Hell if they can hype this up enough I may even read a book or two lol.

The books are an airport read. The fact that there have been 16 and you haven't read one yet makes me think this won't be the start of a series of films. One Shot was #9 in the series. There aren't vampires, werewolves or most of the other things that get a mainstream younger film audience. More book series end up on TV.

The ultimate Jack Reacher in my mind would be Ron Perlman. That guy is a giant, he can pull of intimidating better than most, and he's a great actor.

If the movie studios insisted on someone a little prettier, I'd choose Clive Owen, though he'd have to bulk up a bit and die his hair.
