vinnieg:
Dratsab: Where does it say Adam was created from dust? The only references I have ever seen (Genesis 26/27 - examples here and here) say "God said let us create mankind in our image..." I've heard at various times times people referring to "dust" and "basic materials" (which could be DNA) but not actually seen it myself.

Having said that I'm not a superstitious person so don't generally bother myself with this, or any other, codified superstition. I do, however, find it quite interesting that in the referenced passages "God" speaks in the plural.

EDIT: BTW - this all seems incredibly off-topic... :-)

Corinthians 15:47 The first man was of the dust of the earth, the second man from heaven.

There are also several references to the first man being created of the earths dust, and his name being Adam

I agree this has gone way off topic :)  I was originally a Catholic, baptised, first holy communion, then commitment.  But since being pushed a bit more, I've gone completely against it, and all other organised religions

I can see why you are no longer a believer. Catholics and that chap with the pointy hat no not Harry its someone more sinister. The pope. Pray to idols (mother mary) and call their priests Father?  There is only one father no other and theres nothing in the bible that says to pray to mother mary. Bit like the Mormons who believe that they will become gods one day, woohoo i wanna be a god too! And lets not forget our very own Destiny Church - if you cannot tip you are not worthy to enter heaven, who hands out golden rings and names them sons who will protect their bishop with their life. Um who else did something like this? Think back to World War 2 a nasty fella with a funny mostache.  No wonder non believers have a hard time taking us seriously.

But anyway i agree this thread is going way off topic. Maybe Geekzone could do with a religion category :) j/k

Good talking to ya vinnieg

Well one way to get more back on topic would be to reference this to the Quran rather than the Bible....

oxnsox: It's all a matter of definition isn't it?
Where we see slavery as having some form of embedded repression along with punishment, this view is not necessarily shared in other cultures.

Similarly this line from the article used as supporting argument:
.... for a decent man who has the means, who is overpowered by desire and who does not want to commit fornication, is to acquire ?concubine? or ?sex slave?.
....Now in my western mind 'fornication' is what it says it is, but clearly in the above context it has two different meanings, overpowered by desire or not!!

Yeah.....looks like "fornication" is sex that isn't accepted as not being fornication.

What is accepted as not being fornication looks to be open to 'redefinition'........

I have heard that in Iran they get around prostitution being illegal by having "marriage contracts". A marriage may last for any pre-defined period.....even just a few hours.....

This reminds me of a I guy I once worked with whose religion banned drinking. More specifically he was 'not to let a drop of alcohol past his lips'.

So at the pub on his first drink he would always dip his finger in the glass and then whilst flicking the residue off to the floor mutter "That's the drop".

So which religion is the "correct" one then?

It's pretty sad that women are there so poorly valued that they can get away with this kind of rubbish. They can bend their beliefs to support pretty much whatever they want.

There will never be peace as long as there is religion.

As for the original topic - the last paragraph summarises it well. Fascinating photos of Afghanistan 50 years ago.

He was talking to his doG. Well so he thought, but he was actually looking at himself in his mirror and saw himself spelt backwards.

I was more than surprised to see the NZH http://www.nzherald.co.nz/ poll this morning with only (so far) 47% of people who think the bible should not be taught in school. I would have thought in secular NZ this figure would have been higher.

But do those that voted actually know what they were voting for (or against)?

Most people haven't read (or understood) the Bible, the Quran, Taoists, Buddhist, or even communists texts and teachings.  How therefore can we expect those same folk to make calls on whether all or any of these should be introduced to school kids, let alone what  sort of 'teaching' is applied to the subject.

Lets just stick to teaching them how to fish,,,, and ride bicycles....

Evolution. It is the theory that best fits the facts. Yes there were and are holes in the theory but these have are slowly filling over time with information tested by many different scientists. From a scientific perspective the theory that a god created each species has many more holes than the alternative.

Religion and science are not incompatible. There are many scientists who are also believers and have no problem with the theory of evolution. A religious scientist does not believe that a god causes the rain to fall and the sun to shine - and neither do most religious people. It is exactly the same with evolution.

'Religious education' in schools. It is not a class taught by professional teachers. Many do not know this. It is given by volunteers from churches. It is often called 'values education'. Many of these volunteers have a serious agenda:

"Auckland parent Bruce Hubbard said he was appalled when his 7-year-old stepdaughter's school introduced "evangelical-style" religious instruction, which reduced her to tears when she was told she could end up in hell. He has since opted out" (Stuff)

Religious education has no place in schools. Religious organisations can do this on their own time with no assistance from schools.

Hasn't this gone way off the topic of Kuwaiti wants more sex slaves?

Perhaps we need a separate Forum for religious topics so we can then either indulge or ignore these according to our tastes.

Secular doesn’t mean no religion allowed, it means the state (and by extension schools) doesn’t have any preference for one religion over another.

So the secular answers would be either ‘no bible at all’ but it could also be ‘bible allowed provided it is taught as part of overall teaching about what religion is, but without pushinhg one over another’
