Goes into the "why didn't I think of that" category. That's be dead easy to implement, seems like a neat idea.

The hardest part of this whole system was working out a way to do the SMS part without breaking the bank.

From the article:

The technology used in that fit out cost several thousands of dollars. Dunn says for most hospitality business owners the profit margins are too small to invest in a system that costly.

I mentioned to Computerworld that the full fledged SMS gateways (with send and reply capabilities), coupled with a shortcode was in the region of $1k a month.

Trying to find a cheap component to handle SMS was also quite expensive, ended up rolling my own basic Windows app that does all the raw AT commands itself.  The modem is actually a 2N VoiceBlue Lite, which is based off a Siemens MC55 chip (bought off trademe for $200).  We used to use these as mobile gateways when we did VoIP phone systems, so I knew they were rock solid.

Was buggy as hell for the first few months while I ironed out the kinks but works like absolute champ now. I have to admit some issues were from customers who can't/don't read Smile
