What do you guys suggest?  I have thought about the Pads maybe Apple in this regard?

Some background:
Not tech savy and English not their first language, all almost in their retiree ages.  They don't use the computer for their work nor text messages. 

What they probably want is just to read the foreign language/overseas newspaper online and news webpage.  They definitely won't be installing apps, customising stuff etc or even use a word processor.  Their peers don't email either, they just pick up the telephone or cellphone to make a voice call.  At most I guess they might use email to receive some scanned documents for example from overseas such as bank or govt letters etc that family/friends forward to them which is faster than snail mail.  Maybe to make a internet payment online or do that wire transfer overseas.  At the moment they just get their family to do it for them ie., check their bank balance on a rainy day or do a payment online.  Much of the time they just get a balance statement from the ATM. 

I have taught them how to use a cellphone to limited success.  With a Nokia 5110 and then a 6210 and now some LG color phone with the big "real" non touch buttons.  It seems that they don't look at the display and read what it says but they tended to remember which buttons to press instead.  However some others do tend to read the screen thou, some do not.  They also at times get mixed up ie., the Nokia 6210 has the power button on the top right .. so sometimes they get confused with the LG phone. So ...  At the moment they know how to search the contacts, dial it, open a text and read but not write.  Speed dial has been set up for them.

You will find many have younger relatives who would like to encourage this and stay in touch more often.

You could ask for snail mail addresses and send an intro asking if they are regular users of email and skype, and/or ask the older people to provide email and skype addresses as part of the training and start from there.

The contact will be more meaningful and the internet use is likely to continue.

Mostly they converse with family/friends similar to their age group - that's mostly voice calls with a telephone.  They don't really use Skype. 

They do have maybe grown up nephews and nieces who have Skype or email but they contact each other via the telephone.  It's only when things contain documents they resort to email because it's quicker than snail mail.  For example, one person's sister overseas doesn't know how to use email either.  So she got her friend who works in an office (middle age person) to email on her behalf re: some govt documents.
