timmmay:
networkn: I was thinking of buying some items from Newegg in the US, but they don't seem happy with my NZ Credit Card. Anyone have a simple workaround?

Someone posted a link to something a 2-6 pages back that may help. I forget the details.

As a test I purchased a Canon Extender EF 2x III valued at NZD$579.89 off valueasket.co.nz and while it took three weeks to be delivered I consider that the savings I made by buying it this way was worth the wait. The comparative cost was $790.00 in NZ and from B&H in the states wanted USD$499 plus USD$51.83 shipping, import duties and GST when it lands.

The product arrived well packaged, no import duties or GST and I'd use them again.

Worth a look.

My first time using youshop. Worked quite well. I was quoted shipping to NZ for USD$30 more than domestic shipping, so I took the gamble and got it shipped to youshop. The shipping came to NZD$22 (so I saved a little bit) and the tracking went like this:
1 At warehouse 05.00 AM on 01/02/14
2 Payment reminder 1 sent 08.00 AM on 06/02/14
3 Paid 08.46 AM on 07/02/14
4 Shipped 07.35 AM on 08/02/14
5 Arrived in New Zealand 01.32 PM on 10/02/14
6 Destination Sort 01.34 PM on 10/02/14
7 In Depot 11.39 AM on 11/02/14
8 Out for Delivery 12.56 PM on 11/02/14
9 Handover - Box Lobby 02.18 PM on 11/02/14
10 Delivered 06.15 AM on 12/02/14

Not bad, four days from shipped to delivered and that includes an extra day because it went through work's PO Box.

I have received an email from youshop saying I have something sent to me. Nice. But I don't remember ordering anything :) Did something like this happen to anyone? Hey, and, no!I don't mean dementia.

I've sent them an email asking to confirm if my name is on the package... Waiting for response.

I're received a response after 9 days:

"This item has been incorrectly attached to your account and I am now requesting this be removed so it no longer shows when you log into your YouShop account.

I apologise for any inconvenience caused."

Relieved. Cancelling my appointment with a geriatric doctor ;)

code "westpac" gives 10% off, you need a westpac credit/debit card though.

Yeah, I tried the Westpac code, bounced my AirNZ card. Nevermaind, only $3 difference.
This one was weird, took quite a while to be delivered - last parcel from Amazon to them was delivered in 2-3 days (left Amazon the day after order, at Youshop two days after that) This one left Amazon day after order, but took a week to be delivered to Portland. (seems to have spent a while in Illinois).

Hmm, as a test - I purchased a pack of playing cards I wanted. It's going to cost $30 to send them. Does that seem exspensive given its size?

Yes, but it depends what the playing cards are packed in. If the seller put them into a big box filled with air packets (those inflatable packaging things) then it might be about right. I just received a pair of shoes - so shoebox sized - was $40 for the delivery. Youshop charges by volumetric size.

Depends on the size! $31.50 is the postage on the equivalent of 2kg package. It's unlikely your cards weigh 2kg, so it will likely be using volumetric weight but that means 10,000cm³ volume (e.g. a cube 22cm in size). That also seems unlikely.

That's not quite true. It uses whichever is greater actual weight or volumetric weight. A shoebox shouldn't have cost $40 (i.e. 3kg or 15,000cm³) I wouldn't have thought.

Just went and checked - It was actually $36.25 - volume of box was 12432 cm2 which gave it a volumetric weight of 2.49kg.

For the pack of cards - you can see on Youshops website the calculation they have used.

Ok cool - I went and checked now I'm on a PC and the sizes are:

Original
Parcel weight 1.2kg
Parcel dimensions 32cm x 20cm x 10cm
Volumetric weight 1.28kg

After repacking
After repacking
Parcel weight 1.05kg
Parcel dimensions 19.5cm x 11cm x 6.5cm
Volumetric weight 0.28kg

Maybe I'm getting something extra!

It's also not being sent until Tuesday which is a shame - thought it might sneak out on Friday their time.
