This was happening to a mate of mine at work and it was a 80 year old that lived down the road

Donzac:  Paperboys? Bit behind the times mate. The herald has'nt had those for twenty yearsEmbarassed

pffft.... I'm behind the times... I'm not the one asking about new technology, that could be used to read the 'news', to catch someone stealing the media that same said news is printed on.

The degree of stupid in this whole issue is so great I just thought it would be fun to offer up some creative comments on options....

...but seriously, just cancel the subscription and spend the savings on a nicer smart phone to just read the content on line for nothing more than the cost of the BB data.

...and save a tree along the way!

I already have a netbook that I read the herald on nearly everyday, Well I did until the recent format changes. It's my girlfriend who actually pays for the subscription to the Weekend herald. If she didn't I'd still buy the Weekend  paper occasionally as it's a different experience reading print and some of the content I just don't enjoy reading from a screen

As for the stupid way I'm trying to catch the thief. I agree. But it is as much a question about the possibilities of streaming video over a wireless broadband connection in NZ as it is  about catching a thief. Has anyone done it successfully? In hindsight I shouldn't have even mentioned the newspaper and the theif

www.r2.co.nz - AIUI Richard uses mobile data to move video all the time.

My experience with mobile data is it all depends on where you are.  Coverage and the number of layer 2 hops, and type of layer 2 hops make a difference.

My 2Deg service in Chch is very different to the service I got in Plimmerton and Wellington when I was there last month.

Mobile is wireless.  If you're on the network edge then performance will be lower than closer to the cell.  If the cell you're on is congested then same.

I can pull ~3mbits on my current device, but that's due to its processor being so slow.  However I don't know how long you could sustain that.

You could go the deterrence approach, find out what time it gets delivered, get your paper, replace it with a paper filled with something smelly & a note saying stop taking my paper (do you own a dog?) and allow that to get stolen.

Talk to prime suspect. Ask them if they'd like to read your weekend Herald. Tell them you will drop it down in the afternoon or the next day when you've finished reading it. Win for everyone.

I'm not surprised that it would be an older person. After all not many kids or teenagers read a newspaper these days. All the news, if they're interested, can be found on the internet.

Good luck catching the culprit, if they're old they won't be able to run very fast so they should be easy to catch, trouble is what do you do when you've caught them?

Citizens arrest :D I knew there was a use for that 200 pack of cheap cable-ties.

Seriously though, you should have a look at some of the time lapse photography apps too. Set it to take a photo every 2 seconds or so, make you storage last.

Dress as a lamp post and stand next to your letter box.
Just watch out for dogs.

And if there are likely to be dogs involved, make sure you video tape yourself too, that stuff will be like youtube gold man!

Variations on one of above plans....

Get down there early enough to wrap a note around the paper telling the culprit that as he's flogging your paper you're going to stop the delivery at the end of the month. Then stop it for a couple of weeks so they believe you.

Or, if you know where they live, alter your delivery address to theirs for a couple of weeks (like you're on holiday). Then pop in and see them when you change it back to say thanks, you may be surprised that they'll fess up.
