Rikkitic:

My kitten Tuffy has long hair that is very badly matted. There are matts everywhere, some close to the skin making them very difficult to remove. I have been able to comb a few out but it is a fairly impossible task and it is hard to do it without hurting him. I have looked for groomers in Hawke's Bay but they all only do dogs. At least, none advertise cat services. Does anyone have any ideas about how to solve this?

@Rikkitic Take her/him to the vet and they will do it, We had the same with out cat who is getting old and missing a few teeth and find its hard to groom himself.

They put him out to it and groomed him all up, when he came out he looked like one of those cats that has zero hair, he sulked for a good month lol. Fur grew back pretty quickly though.

@Rikkitic

As JaseNZ stated let the vet do it - start afresh - Tuffy will appreciate it in the long run so will you.

And as I stated earlier get yourself and Tuffy this grooming brush: Kong Zoom Groom Cat Grooming Brush they are the best. They groom and massage in all one. We are on our 2nd in 20 odd years and all our cats have gone orgasmic when groomed with it.

In 9 days we pick up our new puppy!

Our last dog, Charlie (he's back there in the thread somewhere), died in February. He had Cushings syndrome which took him from us far too soon, he was only 10.

We decided at the time that we would go pet-free for a while, since we've always had a cat or dog around for the last 28 years. Turns out we're not pet-free people. There was a huge hole in the household, kinda furry-shaped, with 4 legs.

So we looked around, and looked around to try and find the perfect wee pup for our particular household. All the dog rescue places, Trademe, the pet shops, friends and relations, we looked and we asked around, we talked to people from the Far North, and the Hawke's Bay, and the Wairarapa, and Manawatu, but the puppies were being snapped up so fast, we kept missing out. Finally I saw a listing appear on Trademe, and pinged them immediately. we weren't first in the queue, but we managed to secure the last pup from their litter, a wee bichon/poodle cross. Then we arranged to meet them and the pup before we paid a deposit. It turns out they are literally just around the corner from us! Well under 1km down the road.

So we met this little fluffball, and once he is old enough, he will move in with us and begin taking over the house.

My kitten Tuffy has reached a milestone. He is completely healthy and hyperactive and his vaccinations have become effective. It is time to introduce him and Moe to each other. Moe is a BIG male used to being the centre of attention. Naturally both cats are desexed. Moe is allowed out for a few hours each morning but spends the rest of the time indoors. He is not hugely aggressive but he does like to play boss and get into occasional altercations with other cats. He is a little over 7 years old. He used to live with siblings but he was a bit of a bully and I think he eventually drove them away, though I can't be sure of that.

Tuffy started out in the company of other cats outdoors and had to assert himself to get his share, though I never saw him in a fight or growl-off. He was probably only about a month or two old when I brought him inside. He has been on his own (except for me) in a separate room for less than three months. I have been letting both cats smell each other by bringing them into the same rooms at different times and it is clear they are aware of the difference.

How can I best bring these two together without starting World War III? I am hoping for practical advice from others who have done it. I have read some of the cat advice sites and I know what they say so I don't need that information but I would welcome hearing about experiences anyone has had with this. My ideas so far: (1) Start by holding each cat at the end of a long hallway with escape routes to different rooms and see what they do. (2) Hold each cat on different sides of a window so they can see each other and observe their behaviour.

Have fun with the introductions. Can not give any advise. How did you go with the fur ? Love to see an uptodate pic.

I'm definitely planning on an update photo but want to put it off a little longer until he is back to his full furry glory.

I worked out a good solution to the fur, by the way. I discovered I could gradually reduce most of the matts by taking bits of matted fur in each hand and gradually pulling them apart. When the remaining matt was small enough, I just combed it out. Sometimes a clump of fur would come loose, but it didn't hurt Tuffy and he didn't object. I only had to cut a few stubborn bits away.

WOW what a cat you have. He actually sits still long enough for you to groom him. Well done to both of you. Look forward to the pic's.

That cat has a wonderful colouring. Very distinctive.

Tuffy and Moe have just had their first proper introduction. Basically they just sniffed and ignored each other. In cat terms, that is about as good as it gets. I will continue to expose them to each other under supervision for awhile before I trust them on their own.

Thanks, I'd like to get a better pic of her if she'd stay still long enough for me to take one. My dad gave me an old Doro cellphone which works with Windows 10. It takes basic pictures and is nothing flash.
