Our two cats do the same,. Though sometimes we don't know if they are hindering or helping, either way as soon as their Aunty (sister-n-law) arrives to cat sit, they ignore us. Then on return home they yell at us 😾

Hoogie (Blue Ringneck) and Spike (Cockatiel)...

 

Hoogie is the real "attention seeker" - he likes to hog onto the limelight and will come close to you when you have the camera/phone around.

 

 

Parrots look to be fun pets from the various videos you see of them on YouTube, but who looks after them if you have to go away?  Can you take their cage next door to a friendly neighbour, or would they create mayhem at being left behind?  I'm thinking of one of my dogs that used sus we were travelling if we were loading the car, and get in and totally refuse to get out in case we left her behind.

Yes they are definitely fun pets to have, however, they can be destructive at times - I've had some walls (especially up curtain rails) where they've chewed through wall paper etc..

But to answer your question about when we go away, we had a lady who looks after them for us.  We usually bring our cages to her - she is not exactly "next door" but it isn't too far away.  The lady's business name was called Jabberbird Lodge...

The worst situation for us, due to some unforseen circumstances, was when we were living in Wellington and had to leave them home while we are with our sick child up in Starship in Auckland.  For that situation we had to leave them home, but we had another lady that comes and feed them every day, and she usually spends some time with them as well.  She's really good with them so we felt pretty safe leaving them at home with the lady.

Yet the most recent situation, was X'mas/New Year last year when we went away for a few days down to Welly, we left them home and did get a neighbor to pop over and feed them and replenish their water bowls with clean water everyday.

In a way yes they can get up to mayhem and mischief if left unattended for long - we usually leave them out of their cages if we head out for our weekend grocery trips etc, and sometimes they are good, other times they can make a mess LOL..

The tough little guy gave it his best shot, but as expected he didn't quite make it to his 18th. Douglas passed away yesterday at the ripe old age of 17yrs, 10mths and 27 days! He'd had a pretty good innings but eventually age caught up with him. If I'm grateful for anything out of this lockdown its that WFH allowed me to spend more time with him and that he was never alone in his last few weeks.

Douglas turned 17 this morning. Profoundly deaf, partially blind and slightly incontinent but still terrorising the neighbour's cats when they dare enter our backyard. We're not expecting an 18th out of him but we'll continue to cherish every day we have with him from here on.

I'm really sorry to hear that he's gone. I'm glad you had a nice life together. 

Our boy has just turned 9 yesterday and I dread the day he leaves us.
