David Attenborough calls humans a "plague".

Maybe Gareth can get on this bandwagon and move from cats to humans!! Wink

ajobbins:
If there is a genuine problem here, which I am not yet fully convinced there is, I think it would be better to address it in a similar way to Australia. Here in Melbourne, I am required by law to register my cats (I have two). Local council by-laws limit me to owning two cats (unless by written exemption). My cats if outside (they never are) must be wearing council issued ID tags at all times and there are heavy penalties for breaching any of these by-laws. My cats are micro chipped and neutered. If they were not, my registration fees would be significantly higher. Many parts of Australia also have by-laws requiring cats be kept inside at night. Breaching any of these laws can mean my cats could be destroyed and/or I be heavily fined.

I think the above approach is a much more sensible way to address this.

Personally, I agree with phasing out cats. But some registration or curfew system would be a good step, as well as benefit to owners for neutering and microchipping.

Whatever you do, attacking the idea is fine. But defacing his Wikipedia page with name calling is just stupid.

Whoever has done that is an idiot.

I think of all the problems of having my cat inside over night, and of someone late at night chasing around their cat outside to try get it inside. How is this by-law even monitored?

Trapping and shooting.

Wish Gareth would just go away, he seems to always be in the media. He has this tendency to think he knows everything about everything. Love the way they always call him an economist. I see that as just a glorified fortune teller.

I honestly think that following the sale of GMK and his more limited involvement with out business interests he is bored, and looking for things to do - things that he really shouldn't have anything to do with.

He needs a better hobby

mattwnz: So does he also think that humans should consider whether we should breed or not, or perhaps one child per family, to reduce human impact on the earth?

Humans should definitely consider if they breed or not, especially as we actually can make choices in that regard, we're certainly filling up the petri dish.

This just lost his (former) company 2 kiwisaver accounts.

Personally cats are far more interesting to me than birds. If the birds are too dumb to fly, then they will follow the Dodo and birds that are smart will prevail. That's life.

Nah. Harsh would be saying that if it was not for his son you'd never have heard of him...!! ;-)

I honestly don't believe I have ever seen Gareth Morgan say anything positive.

Yes. I agree.

If I had that much money, I'd be on my private island letting the rest of y'all get on with whatever nonsense took your fancy secure in the knowledge that it would be pretty unlikely to ever bother me whilst I planned which country I would visit next by private jet or plane....
