minigopher17: Third one is threatening to suspend your account apparently...

So the third one is "the break up"... or is it more "lets see other people and see how it goes"?

Well the first one means no more sex (you cannot place any new listing on trademe)

Nah, that sounds more like marriage...

So the third email is a "Shotgun Wedding" email then!!

mattwnz:  Maybe though they could link it to a creit card which automatically tops up the account,

You can indeed do this if you are using the "My Products" feature of TradeMe (My Products > Settings, enable Auto Billing and give them your CC number).

That said, there has been mention from Trade Me devs that My Products may be scrapped in future.    Presumably in favour of pushing more people to use the TradeVine system to list (which Trademe purchased).

networkn: I *HATE* this new email direction. They are a corporate making millions, sounding pathetic in emails. It really grates my nerves. The account doesn't need love, it needs money.

If my Wife started up with this nonsense she would be down the road, sadly there aren't plenty more auction sites in the sea!

They have been sending them out for quite some time. It is the way many online businesses now word things, it is a sort of jokey and informal way. Have you tried mailhimp, and the way it words things for an extreme example, although you can turn the default cheeky wording off.

The timing of the emails are not very good either. Often I'd still be in the middle of closing off the trade and I'd get emails telling me I am a scumbag for owing them money. Rude of them in my opinion.

mattwnz: It is a bit of a flaw that the system allows you to go into debt anyway. If their system was smart it wouldn't allow you to have auctions running, that if they sold, the commission would send your account into debt, at least for the reserve price. It will likely still go into debt if the auction goes for a lot more than the reserve. Maybe though they could link it to a creit card which automatically tops up the account, so it doesn't. Surprised they haven't thought of doing either of those options. The first options though would be unpopular, as it may require larger traders to have a large amount of credit with them, so the second option is probably a better one.

It is too hard and as you say it would annoy people.

Remember that the when you incurred that "debt" it did not cost Trade Me a huge amount of money.  It's not like where you have bought a physical product.  The cost in providing your auction will be largely incurred even if you auction does not result in a sale.

I'm had a small win without any email reminders. My Pay Now account has been -4.90 for a year or more while I've done no selling. I presume the balance owed is 10c less than the minimum $5 they'd charge my credit card.Smile

It would be more interesting if the email read what they meant

" Pay us the $$$ you owe us we are not a *Beep*en bank or a credit company, Pay soon or the heavies will be round in a shot smashing in your front and breaking some knee caps "

"It's a nice little Trade Me account you have here. It would be a shame if anything bad would happen to it."

Being cute is hipster. Just look at all these new online services, social networks with cute little mascots, rounder corners and things like "We love you and we are making the best experience. Register below to be the first to know when we are ready for you"...

("The first" really meaning one of the 200,000 getting the same email when they think they have enough pink rounded corners).

Just a reflection of the rampant hipsterism going around on the web, where everyone is a "designer" making "beautiful things".

Oh dear, we've noticed that your Trade Me account has been in debt for over two weeks - your current account balance is -$210.36.

Big +1, don't try to pretend you're my mate whilst at the same time upping success fees to close to 10% and charging $1.99 per minute for telephone support.

What a rip off it's become and there's nothing anyone can do as they've been left to become a behemoth that dominates the NZ market in just about everything online.

Yah I think you hit the nail on the head. Trademe and I aren't friends, we have a customer supplier relationship that I pay a pretty penny to have the privilege of, and it's the only part of our interaction which is friendly, the rest of the time, you are squeezing me as hard as you can and providing little or no support.
