I for one applaud this decision. National Parks should be left as unspoilt as possible IMO.

Not sure what the envirnomental implications would have been...tunnel was underground, was it not?

Haven't read much about it other than that it was a 10km tunnel for buses.

Half a million tonnes of spoil would have been deposited in the Hollyford valley; that was one of the reasons Nick gave for canning it.

The whole appeal of making it in there is it takes effort...we already have enough places in NZ where the natural beauty is spoilt by large buses rumbling up, offloading 50 tourists...all armed with cameras. Five minute stop, click click...onto the next spot. Leave the Milford area to the people that really want to experience the true 100% Pure NZ...you should have to put a bit of effort in to get there.
I think they were worried all that back fill would have created a flooding/damming issue in the valley...good decision. Hopefully those people that are trying to put a mono-rail through there as well give up!

The tourists already arrive in large numbers by bus.  This is just about making it more efficient for those that can't afford to fly in.

Monorail is a much better option, it will cause a lot less disruption putting it in place.

Never mind.  Having that massive gambling den .. I mean conference centre will make up the balance in tourism dollars.

Who would want to be stuck in a bus in a 10km tunnel built on the cheap? Smith didn't think they could even complete the tunnel for the money they were talking.

It would beat being stuck on a bus for an extra few hours.

The comment from Nick Smith about their ability to complete the tunnel within their budget was unnecessary.  There are plenty of ways to ensure the money is there to complete the tunnel, he was just being a politician.
