Hi guys

I'm asking this, as I live in Auckland. I know even in the strongest out of the strong quakes centred down there, it's probably not going to be effect us in Auckland in tems of building damage etc.

But what I am worried about is, if the event of a big quake (I have a feeling it could be imminent) what's the chances of it effecting cities outside Wellington in terms of communcation damage?

I know that the train network in Auckland would be pretty much screwed, as the central command station is in the Wellington area.

What's the chancs of other issues, as I know quite a lot of the power supplied to the country comes from down there too, the wind farms in the Wairarapa comes to mind.

Plus there's also the option of the South Island loosing some form of connectivity with the North Island, as I'm pretty sure all the cables linking the the communication between the two isands comes under the cook strait. I know that's the case for broadband. I'm not sure about TV stations.

What would happen in terms of communication in the event of a large quake?

Thanks

For a quake to occur in Wellington and affect Auckland in a serious way, you'd have to be looking at one serious shaker.

Be prepared but not worried.

Well all the politicians and central government is in Wellington, so there would be some upside at least from a major quake down there.

I am sure that those in Welly/Marlborough are more than curious. Hope your internet holds up....

What a stupid thing to say.

My kids are terrified ( and those from CHCH know just what a big quake can do).

Why don't you refrain from posting until you grow a brain

I enjoy NonprayingMantis comments on this forum, but I have to agree, this is not the right place or the right time. I know what it is like to see a home where the one side of the top storey is on the ground and the owner is moseying around, recovering what he can..

I think you might be over reacting. It was a joke, I was going to make one about the same myself. Make yourself a cup of tea my friend, it's just a little light hearted humour. Nobody doubts the seriousness or the suffering of those in Christchurch.

No need to be snappy about it, its a legitimate question that I'm interested in as well.

Back to the main question, I think it would vary a lot depending on a lot of factors (Location, strength, depth etc) of the quake.
It could cause issues with flights, inter-island water travel, power, phone/internet, maybe even the government may be in difficulty as a result.

I remember seeing a sort of mini-series on TV a while ago about just this, big quake hits Wellington and shows what happened after, and I think they ended up moving government to Auckland instead of rebuilding in there. I highly doubt that would ever happen, mixing the Business Capital and Political Capital would only cause more issues and drama.

If all else fails of course, we all abandon ship and move to Aussie.
