just out of curiosity whats your favourite boardgames/nerdgames.

we have a bunch of nerds that get together once or twice a month to play games, my personal favourites are

# Battlestar Galactica (new to this, but love the team/traitor aspect)
# Eclipse (great, but can take ageees)
# Carcassonne
# The Resistance (similar to BSG, but can be played in 10 minutes)
# Citadels
# Munchkin
# Smallworld
# Dominion (haven't played this one in ages though)
# Cutthroat Caverns
# Fury of Dracula
# Ticket to Ride
# Roborally (this can be really funny with a large group)

Others that I thought were ok
# Settlers of Catan (only played this once, maybe just had a bad game)
# DC Deck Building

I have a couple on order from nzgameshop.com
# Shadows over Camelot
# Forbidden Island

anyone have suggestions of great games?

We regularly play Settlers, which IMHO is much improved with the Seafarers expansion. I custom built a table and card holders just for Catan, but it is also good for other games.
Recently have bought Skyline 3000(which is believe is a rework of an older game "Capitol") which is pretty good, and Tzolk'in The Mayan Calendar, which is complex but has a very cool mechanic system for advancing the game.

Cheers,
Joseph

Edit: added link to pics of the table and also of my painting my tzolkin gears project.

Some good card games:

  • 6 Takes

  • Lobo 77

  • Bang

  • Cards against humanity

If you like co-op games then Castle Panic is not bad - its a sort of tower defense board game

Some other games I enjoy:

  • Carcasonne towers expansion

  • Stone Age

  • Asara

  • Pergamon

Ooh yes Cards Against Humanity is great. Definitely not safe for parents, not mine anyway!
You can actually download the PDF of the game for free, legitimately, from the CAH website.
I've printed this off a couple of times for gifts. Got the back side of the [question card] pages printed solid black before cutting up the cards, which took quite a long time. But it was worth it. A terribly offensive game for horrible people. Great!

Cheers,
Joseph

Edit: here's a pic of what the self printed game ends up looking like.

I love Settlers of Catan and Carcassonne.

Also love Star Fluxx which is a really fun and funny card game.

I used to enjoy Risk but now just find it boring.  Also play the usual suspects like Trivial Pursuit

I've also recently dug out some of my old board games from when I was a kid.  Lost Valley of the Dinosaurs was a particular favourite :)

I like playing these board games but none of my friends do so I play on the iPad haha! Not quite the same...

This not a geek game and is OT but I was introduced to a card game called Cards Against Humanity by my friends in the US last month. It's pretty funny/poor taste but good for a laugh (unless easily offended!).

Edit just noticed someone already mentioned it!

Other that I haven't played anything really for years.. lack of friends with interest in relevant locations etc.

I still have my copy of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starship_Troopers_(board_wargame) sitting on a shelf waiting for me to find someone who wants to play it with me.
