Klipspringer: Where is this so called poverty in NZ?
We don't have poverty here

You're right! The National government doesn't bother measuring poverty and so on, so obviously it doesn't exist!

But it sure as hell likes subsidising employers wages bills, by topping up family incomes with the 'caring for families' payments.

Geekamouse: Economic poverty is relative. It depends on where you live and who you compare yourself with. The real problem in our society, where no-one actually starves, is poverty of the spirit. Can't be bothered, no self-esteem, take the easy way, take no responsibility, dwell on your rights, choose to fry your brain on substances, just don't need to make an effort to get by. It's all 'their' fault. You can't buy your way out of an attitude of mind or an ingrained culture. The poor will always be amongst us.

Totally agree with this.
And could not have said it any better myself.

"Poverty" in NZ is NOT a government problem (I feel the government already does more than enough for those living in so called "poverty")

- Free schooling
- Free healthcare
- free housing
- free weekly payments from WINZ

What more do we want the government to do?

Child poverty is a parental problem. Caused by parents who don't give a sh1t. Spend all their money on booze, drugs etc .... So sure. There is this so called child "poverty".

How many adults in NZ are living in "poverty"? Very very few. Probably none? And thats what I base my reasoning on. Its a parental problem. And it can be very easily solved. Prosecute parents who don't feed their kids etc ... After all that is abuse? WHy are parents allowed to get away with this? What kind of parent sends their child to school hungry? Yet I can get prosecuted for smacking my child on the bum when they naughty!

There is a house close to where we live. Kids living in "poverty". Its very sad. Parents are always drunk. Kids are on the street. Probably go to school hungry? Why? because the parents don't give a sh1t. What angers me even more is that this is a state house. Fully paid for by yes, our "very bad" National government. Parents on WINZ. Always standing outside smoking etc ...Late night parties always irritating the neighborhood.  Maybe I'm judging here? But it does not seem right. Especially for their kids.

/end of rant
/and way off topic

gehenna: I read today that 1 in 200 people are related to Genghis Khan. Randy old sod really got around.

There is a fantastic podcast series (Rise of the Khans) by Dan Carlin as part of his Hardcore History Podcast.

Genghis didn't just get around - he and his forces took over/wiped out large swathes of China and then started into Europe by way of the Muslim states. Absolutely fascinating. But yeah, a ton of rape - "taken as a wife" is most definitely a nice way to say a horrible thing. He did it to a lot of his enemy's wives, daughters and mothers.

I love the way you *ahem* don't make sweeping statements and lump all the poor in one basket.

Yeah, I'd like to take the opportunity to apologise to the OP for my part in kicking that off. My original comments were to do with gene pools and I didn't realise the effect one word would have.

Didn't anybody tell you I was a hacker?

Yea apologies too.
I went off on a tangent

I just get irritated when people say we have poverty here in NZ.
To me its just disrespectful to the millions of kids world wide that live in real poverty. These kids would give anything to live here in NZ and have the privilege to live like our poorest.
Apologies again ....

You're well off target here.
Child poverty is a child's "problem" - even if it has a parental "cause".
And it absolutely is our problem and thus a government problem, even if there's a valid debate about whether we/government do enough, more than enough, or just do the wrong things.

Happy to carry on with this one in another thread.
But as already mentioned, I think we off topic.

Meh.

I'm unusual (apparently!) in that OT issues bother me not in the slightest.

Many people seem to regard going OT as some sort of mortal sin requiring a smack from the moderator like a naughty child.

I on the other hand regard conversations on line as no different from those in any other sphere of human interaction. You don't have a bloke in the pub giving you a smack every time the conversation wanders through natural progression so I see no reason at all to expect one anywhere else!

Anybody who thinks the gene pool in NZ isn't thin enough to cause concern, hasn't tried Internet dating.

KiwiNZ: our Gene pool is fine we punch above our weight in so many endeavours on the World stage

Well, top marks for the most repeated NZ-related cliche there...! ;-)

Ignoring sports, which contribute little if anything to the betterment of mankind, the number of endeavours is not quite so large I suspect and there is also a tendency to believe our own publicity!
