timmmay: Get WAMP and run it locally on your windows machine, or I presume MAMP for Mac. I run wordpress locally for testing.

You don't need web hosting, but hostgator is good if you do, and I can give you a discount code. However I think you need to learn a bit more about the web and web development is usually done, which is understandable if you're a student just starting to look at this.

+1

You clearly aren't knowledgeable on the basics of how websites are served to people.  I am not saying thats a bad thing, but something you will need to learn if you want to run your own site.  The basic areas you will need to learn about include but are not limited to Webservers, Serverside scripting versus Browser side scripting and Domain names.

Thanks. I have done a class in PHP using WAMP server and built a website where users could sign in and order products. Also done a JavaScript class and an HTML + CSS class. I was just unaware that i could use WAMP server to practice with WordPress, but will do that. You are right i'm not knowledgeable in Webservers and domain names. Is WAMP server capable of practicing with other technologies such as Joomla? There seem to be a few jobs for students in these areas.

Yep.

WAMP is an endpoint bundle solution.

So it simply lets you easily configure apache/php/mysql and hosting.

So you can apply forum software or php packages with ease the same as if it were hosted on an overseas ISP/hosting service. Except less traffic :)

WAMP = Windows, Apache web server, MySql database server, PHP scripting language. You can install anything you like onto them.

Another tip: in your hosts file set up a domain name like (if your name is fred)

127.0.0.1 www.fredtest.com fredtest.com

Then when you go to fredtest.com in your web browser it'll go to your local machine. It just looks nicer than localhost, and works better sometimes. If you have a static IP then put that into the hosts file.

If you don't know what that means google "hosts file" then "how edit windows 7 hosts file".

You've asked the question in a good place, you'll get plenty of support... but do a quick google before asking a question, to save a bunch of people a bunch of time.

I'm happy to give you an account on my server to play with Wordpress if you wanted. It would be on a development server so occasionally it gets restarted/upgraded, software changes etc. So I couldn't guarantee you 99.9 uptime like the big boys but its free and fully functional (US based with Cpanel, One Click Installer etc). PM me if interested.

Geektastic: I use Bluehost based in the USA.

24/7 on line customer services and awesome uptime for around $250 a year.

My last website design company hosted my sites on their server for a while. Last year I had a problem over Xmas and just got the stupid New Zealand "We don't bother doing any work for 2 or 3 weeks at this time of year - come and see us in mid January" response.

That was it - if I am working, I expect those supporting me to be doing so, so that was the end of that relationship.

That isn't normal you know. But I wouldn't reommend hosting a website with a web designer, as they are just a middleman. Go to the host directly. Many nz ones seem to offer 365 day support and an emergency way of contacting them if the server goes down.

In this case it was their server.

It is all too typical in a variety of industries. Working in effect an 11 month year is just backwards.

These days there is no reason to host with your website designer. Although some of them require it, as they have their own CMS system which they won't allow to be hosted elsewhere. It is probably even worse if they have their own server, as they would be responsible for it. If they provide that sort of service, they should have someone available 365, otherwise I wouldn't use them. It would have been better if they were a reseller, as it would then be managed by the web host. So if the web designer was away, the server would still be monitored by the web host for any problems. But I would suggest cutting out the web designer, and just buying the hosting directly from a web host. I believe Blue host and hostagtor are now owned by the same company these days.
