So this one is settled then?

A data scientist says he has settled one of the most pressing conundra of the digital age. He has discovered the difference between geeks and nerds. Burr Settles, software chap at crowdsourced translation platform Duolingo, rooted through millions of tweets to find the sorts of words that were used at the same time as either geek or nerd.

Geek – An enthusiast of a particular topic or field. Geeks are collection oriented, gathering facts and mementos related to their subject of interest. They are obsessed with the newest, coolest, trendiest things that their subject has to offer.

Nerd – A studious intellectual, although again of a particular topic or field. Nerds are “achievement” oriented, and focus their efforts on acquiring knowledge and skill over trivia and memorabilia.

You can see his original research – which is pretty darn nerdy [or perhaps geeky, by his definition—Ed.] – here.

I have quite a different theory. I think that western society breaks down into:
 - Nerds
 - Trendy Urban Liberals
 - Conservative Christians

Each of those three main groups has a number of sub-groups, with geeks being a sub-group of the trendy urban liberals.

I first saw this on the Daily Mail.

That about summed it up for me.

To put it in a nutshell look find 'ebook' and look right ... yeah, you are going to spot 'books' very close to the same distance from the change line.

I pasted someone with a shovel digging a hole on the way to work this morning. I have no idea what they were doing or why. I do know, however, that they contributed more to humanity in the five seconds I observed them than whoever came up with this graph.

Didn't anybody tell you I was a hacker?

Nerds in my experience are a lot like geeks, just with fewer social skills.

Geeks are practical with their definite knowledge

Nerds try hard at attaining knowledge and does nothing else

Swype on iOS is detrimental to accurate typing. Apologies in advance.

If all of your friends are nerds, then you're a nerd, otherwise, you're probably not.
