Could also be for security reasons, someone could call around all of the stores and ask for how many iPhone 5s they have... and hit the store with the most for example.

Very unlikely I think as they would be covered by insurance, plus there are items that are more valuable than that. Plus they are all locked away and not on shelves, and even of stolen, they can probably be locked down so they are unusable. I think the price match thing is the most likely reason, so other competing retailers aren't able to confirm whether they have stock for a priced matched item. In a way it probably helps the person who is price matching as the other retailer can't then say that the other store doesn't have stock. All they can probably do is say that they aren't able to confirm the price and probably have to then price match it without that confirmation, or they will decline to price match, based on them not being able to price match.

Good price too, if anyone else is interested.  The next cheapest Linksys EA6900 wifi AC router is around $350, NL are selling for $260 + flybuys. 



Harvey Norman had the EA6700 for $209 (40% off all networking / NAS)




I looked at it, and is a very sharp price,  but decided the Ea6900 was a still a very decent deal for something that i will use for a number of years. 

Just goes to show HN on the very odd occasion, can do a really decent deal.

I have, but with only one store, NL. They have heaps of terms where if an item is restricted to one per customer at another store, but have no limit on stock quantity , then they won't price match. Same if they don't have the item instock. They won't price match on anything they have to reorder in, eg they don't stock or have run out of. They used to, but they appear to have really got tough. But never has any probs with the warehouse, which is owned by the same company anyway.

It's an attempt to eliminate the practice of other retailers who will price match if a product is stock from ringing HN and being able to find out if a product is in stock or not.




If NL are trying to stop other retailers from finding out their stock holding, or indeed the cheapest price they will offer... it's pretty easy for them to solve the issue I guess.
The sales person needs to simply ask the customer if they can call them back on a LAND LINE with the answer in a few minutes time... they know another retailer simply can't be reached on a landline without giving away who they work for. After all, as soon as you ring them, they'll answer 'Welcome to ##### ##### how can I help you?'.

But ultimately, they do NOT have to give you stock amounts.
Their business, is, ultimately, their business. Not ours.


Do people still have landlines at private addresses? We got rid of ours a year ago and I always felt a bit behind the curve - my brother in the US has not had one for about 5 years now!

With 600 minutes included on each of 2 cellphones and Skype/Face Time for overseas, we had plenty of already paid for chat time so as soon as naked broadband was available we dumped the landline.

Batwing: I'm sure they have their reasons but its more than a tad frustrating making the trip to buy something specific and in my experience they are out of stock half the time and make no attempt to offer to get anything in, not always for items on special either. Then there's the times you order online and literally never get a call to pick up, call the store and lo and behold "Its been sitting out back all week we didn't get round to it."


Or worse, you visit the website that says your local shop has stock available, but when you get to the shop they say they're out of stock, but we can order it for you.

My response: If I wanted and knew it would have to be ordered I would have done it myself online, at home, and wouldn't have had to waste my time coming to your shop...'

I find that I'm telling local shops this more often. They can get you the item you want, but they don't have any in the shop.  NZ Retailers often complain about online shopping and buying by customers is not fair. I just say "if you want customers walking in off the street you need to have the products available for customers to buy there and then, not say you can 'order them in' when their potential customers can do that themselves from the comfort of their own home, without ever visiting your shop.





I know PBTech does show stock available in each branch before you walk in. But unsure how accurate they are. 


With my recent computer build, I checked for everything I wanted on the PB website, printed the page showing it was available at the Wellington store, and took the printouts with me.  Saved a lot of time with them finding the parts I wanted.

Dick Smith do (or at least used to do - don't really shop there much lately) this every time I have asked about a price match. I think it's their normal practice.

Even more annoying is when you call them to check availability in a store and they refuse to even put you through to said store instead telling you to go in! If I wanted to go racing around every NL store within a 20km radius I wouldn't care but come on! I have a phone for a reason.

I just went to a HN here in Adelaide with a print-out of an aussie online retailers price and they price matched it. Saved $150 off the HN special price and $470 off the RRP. I didn't really think it would work. The bloke wanted to add the shipping price, so I looked it up on my phone, and it was free shipping. He was happy with that!
Not as happy as me tho!

I think they stopped price matching when they changed the focus of their stores (to the shiny shiny appliance store). They also stopped the 7 day right of return at the same time.

I have had Mitre10 call Bunnings before to confirm a price, but I can see why since the Bunnings website is horrible

If they want to add shipping, will they bring it to your house as well? If not tell them to GTFO with adding shipping.


If I live in Chch, and I'm price checking a freezer...
And the store I'm using to price check against is based in Auckland... and the shipping on their website at $125...
Then, if the retailer in Chch store charges me $70 to install the freezer...
But is $50 more expensive than the Auckland store, then I'm still winning.
