The North Water on BBC - a dark and gritty historical drama mini-series of five episodes - very good IMO. Starring Colin Farrell and Stephen Graham, with Tom Courtenay.

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7660970/

Set mainly in the Arctic, IMDB says this is the most northerly latitude at which a TV series has ever been filmed.

The fluffy seals getting shot in the face didn't really sit well with the missus.

Didn't get past the first episode.

Yes, some of the more graphic scenes (and not just the hunting) I found particularly difficult to watch - averted my eyes and even briefly FFW-ed at one point. However overall I really enjoyed it.

I read-up a bit on how they filmed it in the Arctic and the dangers that the cast and crew faced - very interesting. A lot of it is real and not extensive use of CGI.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

Been watching a few things of late.

  • Tipping Point Lucky Stars (TVNZ On Demand) - gripping, suspenseful and well acted 7/10
  • Squid Games (Netflix) - watched this with subtitles in the original Korean, as dubbed was off-putting. Only seen one episode so far. It's...OK
  • The Crown S4 (Netflix) - Still gripping, still showing me things I didn't remember from history and still filling gaps with made-up stuff. I am really enjoying it, but I really do not like the Royal Family (the whole lot of them) as a result
  • Marvel's Inhumans (Disney +) - It's a lower budget affair and it shows. Not a massive fan, but I'll keep watching it, while I can't go mountain biking on anything less than a Grade 2 trail
  • Lego Masters Australia (3 Now) - boy, there's some skill in the hands of those nerds
  • Kominsky Method S2 (Netflix) - really enjoyed S1 and S2 is even better than the first season
  • Jack Whitehall's Travels with my Father (Netflix)  - well...that's the end of the series. Quite sad to see the end of this show, but Michael is getting older and can't really travel as well as he used to - and of course, there's a pandemic.

Squid Game - Netflix - 9/10

Wow. Brutal on so many levels, but wow.

Found it a little slow and I flipped between subtitles and English dubbing, but it was very interesting.  Preferred subtitles in the end as the dubbing was a bit cardboard.  Those that have only watched 1 or 2 episodes are really missing the core elements to understanding the premise and would encourage to stick with it.

I preferred Alice in Borderland if for nothing else than for the variety and ingenuity of the games. But Squid Game had better character development.

We much prefer slow. We want to see character and plot development over the series, not have everything wrapped up in a single episode with a new premise in each one.

I didn't know about the options to have dubbing vs sub-titles and obviously lucked out with sub-titles from the start.

The end felt a little weak in comparison to the rest but overall we both really enjoyed it and looked forward to starting each episode.

Last night finished The Pacific. Good follow up to The Band of Brothers.

Before that we watched I Know This Much is True, worth a watch as well.

woodson: Squid Game on Netflix. One episode left and highly recommended. Dark, moving and beautifully designed. 9/10 thus far.

Just finished Squid Game and it really is outstanding. Highly recommended.

Watched the first episode of season 2 of The Morning Show. Season 1 was pretty flawed but entertaining. Season 2 seems just to be a mess. I’m not sure I’ll bother to watch the rest.

We watched the first two episodes of the second season and we're a bit confused as the continuity seems out of whack.

I think we will persevere, but it's been tough going compared to the first season.

I'm mostly trying to contain my excitement waiting for Season 3 of Succession to begin. Not long now!

If you haven't seen the first two seasons you really should.

Awesome on so many levels.

My 13 year old has watched Gotham (Netflix) at least a couple of times now.

I've never bothered to watch many superhero movies but I've seen the odd snippet of Gotham from time to time. Although it has special effects, effects are not the highlight of this program. Rather, the story revolves around the conniving and double dealing of the characters as they try to outmanoeuvre each other.

And, a surprising thing in this day and age. Although it's got a 13 rating, there's absolutely no swearing in it.

Just rewatched the whole 5 seasons of Misfits.

From 2009 but stands up alright, last couple of seasons not as strong due to cast changes but still not bad.
