Been watching a little bit of Ted the series. It's on (I think) TVNZ+

In a silly, infantile way, it's quite amusing (much like the movies). It's also unhinged (in the way that any Seth McFarlane show is, I suppose).

It has a Ted meets Family Guy feel about it and actually is quite well done, from a "prequel" perspective.

Weirdly it never addresses things from past episides - much like Family Guy and American Dad never do. Sometimes they're the entire plot for an episode and theoretically should form some sort of a theme going forward.

7/10 from me so far.

Watching Criminal Record with Peter Capaldi and Cush Jumbo in the central roles, have enjoyed it so far, would recommend.

Also looking at Monsieur Spade with Clive Owen playing the famous American detective in semi-retirement in France. Started out strong but my interest is waning as the story has gone on, a bit on the fence about it now.

Finished watching the second season of Trigger Point, don't think it was as strong as the first, but a good time-waster if you're looking for something.

Have checked out the first two episodes of the new season of Halo. Haven't played the game so I come at it from that perspective, not sure what to think as yet. Found the dialog really difficult to hear clearly in the first episode, that's about my strongest takeaway so far. Apparently there have been storyline changes after the first season got mixed reviews, but seemed like all the main characters are still there?

I was off work sick on Friday so I decided to plough through some shows I had on the go, but hadn't finished watching.

Loki Season 2 (Disney+) - 5/10

Remember back in the immediate aftermath of the start of the pandemic (~2021) when there was a glut of new Marvel content coming out on Disney+? I do.  WandaVision was great, Falcon and Winter Soldier was great.  And then there was Loki. Mad, crazy Loki.  It introduced the TVA, and really kicked off the whole multiverse thing.  I enjoyed season 1.  It was weird, but fun and (mostly) simple to follow, especially for a MCU fan who has never been invested in the source comics.

Season 2, however, wasn't so great for me.  I found it hard to follow, and even now (just a couple of days after I binge-watched the final 4 episodes), I can't really tell you what happened.  I can't even really put my finger on what didn't work.  Tom Hiddleston is still good, and even Owen Wilson (who I normally don't really care for) was okay.  Jonathan Majors returns as the whole "Kang/He Who Remains" thing.  Ke Huy Quan does alright as Ouroboros (OB).  I think it just feels like a mess, it's hard to follow, and everything is just very "meh".  Disappointing.

Kaleidescope (Netflix) - 7/10

No, not the NZ magazine show from the 80s - a "unique viewing experience" about a team of thieves breaking into an "unbreakable" safe to steal billions in Bearer Bonds.  The "unique" element, as it is explained in the opener, is that the episodes can be watched in any order, and Netflix offers up a random order for you when you start.  Episodes are colour-coded, and show a part of the story at different points in time - with some going back 25 years before the heist, and some going forward past the heist event.

The highlight for me has to be the two main "leads" (though, depending on when you enter the story, I guess you could have a different view about who the story is about) - Giancarlo Esposito and Rufus Sewell.  Both do a really good job.  The ensemble cast do a good job though, and the story is entertaining and gripping enough to make it worth continuing watching.  For comparison, I ditched watching Loki after a couple of episodes, but with Kaleidescope I was engaged enough to watch an episode a night and finish it in about a week.

Not convinced the "non-linear/pseudo-random" format is enough of a hook though.  My partner has started her own Kaleidescope watching experience, and so far she's been served up the same order that I had.  If you don't expect too much from that gimmick, it should still be an entertaining enough story.

The Crown Season 6 (Netflix) - 8/10

I have enjoyed the entire series, but I didn't think I would enjoy the later seasons (recent history) as much as the earlier seasons (older history, though your perspective on what constitutes "older" may vary).  I'm not old enough to have lived through the first 25 years or so of QEII's reign, so I enjoyed the first couple of seasons for the story as much as the portrayals (Claire Foy and Matt Smith were fantastic).  But as we get into the 80s, 90s and 2000s, this is "history" I've lived through so I expected to find the story and characters a little less interesting.  But I actually enjoyed season 6.  Imelda Staunton and Johnathan Pryce as Elizabeth and Phillip are great, but the whole royal family are very well-acted - Charles, Diana, William, Harry etc.  I'm not a royal watcher by any means, but it was interesting to see the angles they approached various events (like the divorce of Charles and Diana, the accident in Paris, and the ascension of William into a more adult role.  I know it's not history, it's a drama, but I still found it interesting to see the events brought together in a narrative.  And I think they ended it well, bringing back Claire Foy and Olivia Colman as prior portrayals of Elizabeth to recognise the role, but in a meaningful way.

Just finished watching a new BBC doco - The Space Shuttle that Fell to Earth - about the loss of Columbia and its crew on re-entry in 2003. Three one-hour episodes. Even though the story has previously been documented pretty thoroughly, this one is excellent imo.

Details on IMDB

"Halo" S2E3 on TVNZ+. I like it. I like it a lot. Sure, it's predictable and silly, but there's still a lot to like there, especially for a show based on a shooter.

I wonder in what season there will be an ACTUAL HALO. The show infuriates me.

Been watching a bit of telly recently:

  • Halo season two on TVNZ+
  • Masters of the Air on Apple TV+
  • Loot on Apple TV+
  • The Tourist season 2 on TVNZ+
  • Echo 3 on a streaming service (I think it was Apple TV+)

All have been very good, but the most enjoyable was The Tourist. Really got into that one.

Red Queen 2024  [Prime Video] i Wasnt sure what i was doing to see, i heard nothing about it but it was really good. It is a dark mystery thriller with a female Sherlock type lead and a detective Dr Watson type who looks after her. She has a IQ of 242 and some problems that become clearer as the series goes on. Well worth a watch if you are looking for a Sherlock type show. 8/10

Boy Swallows Universe on Netflix

Very quirky Aussie drama/comedy that was riveting for every single one of its 7 episodes.

That is on my "Next Up" list...I wasn't sure what to make of it from the previews.

gehenna: Shōgun is fantastic

Is it related to the 1970's books? I read all of those in the 1980's and really enjoyed them.
