I've been watching a few things recently.

Apple TV+

  • Shrinking - just finished season 2 and sad we'll have to wait another year or so for the next season

    • It's a really engaging and quite funny dramedy
  • Silo - Sci-Fi dystopian drama that is also very good.

    • nearly finished season 2
    • looking forward to the next (and final) two seasons
  • Ted Lasso - Decided to give this a go and have binged the first two seasons in a couple of weeks.

    • It helps that I am a football fan and English by birth, so a lot of the humour and drama suits my sensibilities
    • You don't need to be a football fan to enjoy it though

Disney+

  • Skeleton Crew

    • I'm struggling with this one - it's a little too Disney for my liking.
    • The character played by Jude Law is unlikable, which is exactly as he's supposed to be, but the kids are too...cutesy.

TVNZ+

  • Ludwig

    • Just finished season 1 of this.
    • It's a quirky show starring David Mitchell as his own twin brother, as a police detective in Cambridge, solving murders.
    • It's unusual, funny, drama filled and has a great supporting cast

3Now

  • The Traitors UK - new season

    • Not as enjoyable as previous seasons
    • I'll stick with it

Rewatched the first season of Severence in anticipation of Season 2 finally hitting the screen. Can't believe it's been the best part of three years since it first aired. Really enjoyed looking at it a second time, definitely one of the best sci-fi shows of the last ten years if you're partial to that kind of thing.

If that's not your guilty pleasure then also had a look at the entirety of The Split over on TVNZ+. Bit of a soap opera I suppose but I've surprised myself and quite liked it. Three short and snappy seasons of six episodes each, plus a couple of "christmas special" episodes which dropped over the festive season just gone.

Has Stephen Mangan in it who I've previously only really associated with comedy. Also has The Lazarus Project's Rudi Dharmalingam playing whatever the complete opposite of his character in that is.

I am really enjoying this, especially the twist at the start. The traitors are playing a really good game so far.

I also enjoyed Married at First Sight UK. My favourite bit was the dinner party where Polly threw her glass of wine over Adams head while she was screaming abuse at him. I also enjoyed Luke's beautiful love letter to Amy, although I'm not sure if I approve of him signing off by saying ***redacted by Mod***

Sorry, had to edit the post. Family show and all that. Yikes, that's on TV?? 😲

Yes, it's absolute rubbish, but it's funny because it's rubbish. 🤣

Very relieved by the premiere of Severance's second season. Seems to be the same high quality across the board, from production design to writing, cinematography to acting, with sound design and a score that is second to none. Can't wait to see where this season goes.

Also enjoyed the season finale of Silo. I'm enjoying the lore and mystery box aspects of the show, but I will admit to skipping through some of the sub-plot scenes in episodes, particularly stuff about the down below characters.

I also started re-watching Babylon 5. I pushed through season 1 by following a recommended episode guide, but have watched almost all of season 2. It's easy to forget just how deep B5 goes. The main story arc that builds across several seasons is so well planned and executed that you can forgive the "product of its time" CGI.

CGI aside, the alien makeup and prosthetics in B5 are immaculate. I don't think I've ever seen actors as able to convey their emotional nuance while suffocating in foam and rubber. IMO nothing on TV was on the same level until Saru in Star Trek Discovery.... But that character's prosthetics have the sneaky advantage of being inhabited by Doug Jones. It's always difficult to figure out where he ends and the makeup begins.

I'm also enjoying the new season of Severance so far. It's a proper continuation of the first season, which is great - it doesn't feel like a restart - just a proper continuation.

Silo signed off well, as @gehenna mentioned, but I do feel like I want more. I know that's the point, but the long periods between seasons will end up grinding my gears, no doubt.

Landman 10/10 would highly recommend. Probably the best drama I've seen in a long time.

Had me from 10 minutes in to the last minute of the final episode.

I'll be surprised if they can sustain this pace, but it's awesome right now.

I was not expecting to enjoy this as much as I am.

I'm about to dive into it... BB Thornton was born to play the role he has.. he just makes it look so effortless...

Absolutely. There are so many layers to this, and the character development is second to none. I suspect an offshoot of this has to be in the early stages, centered on his son. That comment will make more sense toward the end of season 1.
