Went into the Queensgate store today since we had lunch the foodcourt anyway and just thought "why not?" Was pretty dire, most of the store is empty and inaccessible now. There was a large bin of random TV remotes for $3 each, presumably from display models. Weirdly all the glass cabinets are for sale for $400 without the keys which doesn't make any sense. They are still locked so they still have the keys so why would they not include them? They did have a handful of Ipods left at 20% off.

They can't give you the locks or keys because every cabinet in a given store uses the same key. So it'd be pretty stupid to sell you the cabinets with the locks and keys.

I also had a bite to eat to eat in the foodcourt and noticed (and I did count them) 18 Indians (or Fijian Indians) coming down the escalator with 1 small DSE bag between them. I guess that sums it up for me ..... no more bargains left.

... and the relevance of their ethnicity is .....?

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

Is the Riccarton Mall store still open? Anyone have any idea what is happening to it? (Its a fairly large store for a Dick Smith - not many others that size in the country I think).

Oh ok, didn't realise they all used the same key. Still not sure many people are going to pay $400 for second hand cabinets that are not lockable.

Those locks are dirt cheap to get re-keyed at locksmiths when I had to get some display cabinets done. You can usually pop the locks off when they are unlocked easy enough and take them in.

Seems like too much hassle for something that costs $400, not that anybody would pay $400 anyway.

Yeah, they aren't in great condition,, and not the best design or quality. I have seen better and cheaper ones online. I think there are business though that are buying things because it is quite convenient to go in and buy what you see. Although not sure if they are letting people take them yet, as quite a few of them had 'sold' on them. If they are sold, why are they still in the store?

Riccarton shop had two staff members at the back sorting and putting stuff into large cardboard boxes.    Not sure if it was for sending to auction or to bring into the main part of the shop for sale.    They have virtually no kitchen products left.

Last 5 days for the Hornby shop, they have a count-down sign saying how many days to go, that they are changing every day.

Riccarton shop does not have this yet.

Doesn't sound like the best security to have everything keyed alike. Also I wonder if someone does manage to get it keyed from the lock, they would then have the key for everyone elses cabinet who purchased it from DSE. To get the best profit, you would think that they would either sell them with keys, but with a warning that other people may also have a key, and to get it changed if they want it to be secure. Or to get someone in to re key them, if it is a cheap thing to do. They could then up the prices. Personally I wouldn't care if someone else had a key to it for home use. You would probably only care if someone was using it in a retail environment, and were keeping expensive things in it.
