What's the most common time people take lunch, 12 or 1pm, for regular 9-5 type office workers? Does it vary by industry?

I often start around 7am so I do 12-1 as I'm hungry by then - I work in IT, with a very flexible schedule. My wife works in a law firm, 1-2 is their standard lunch hour.

Edited to remove references to "hour". I suspect we'll get a lot of "whatever I want" here, since IT people usually get a lot of flexibility.

Hour?  Heck no!  Eat at desk on the run or a quick 10 minutes in the meal room.  Longer lunch break means I have to finish later to complete my required hours.  Would rather go home early :-)

I do 8-4:30 and generally try to take lunch from 1:30 to 2. Only 150 minutes left in the day by the time I'm back at my desk

I think I started my lunch hour at 10am today. Still on my lunch hour at 2pm. A bit wasted today. Alas my work to be done won't dissappear, so it will be catch up later.

Same here but I buy my lunch so I go out at about 11:50 am to avoid the crowds in the lunch bars.

Start at 8.30, usually have lunch around 12, or later depending how I feel (pretty much self manage myself so noone cares, long as the systems are running).
My last job, I started at 8.30 but had lunch at 11.30 so there was always someone in the office over the "usual" lunch period.

Hmm. I am super flexible, being self employed. Sometimes I have a 'lunch afternoon'!

Once when I used to work (many parsecs ago) for the MoD, we went to the pub for lunch on a Friday (which us men usually did) at 12. After Ham, Egg & Chips and 5 pints of ale we returned to the office at 4pm, had a cup of tea and went home at 4.30! Those were the days.

Like others above I don't usually have time for a lunch break, but when I do I prefer it a bit later so that my afternoon is a shorter than my morning. I find that helps me to survive the day.

12:00 to 12:30 for me, so that I can go home at 4:30 instead of 5:00. It's not set in stone though, so I can move it if I need to, but I'm usually hungry by 12 :)

Ok so the four people who do that sort of work all say more like midday than 1pm. Thanks folks.
