So I've booked my full licence test for Albany/Northcross for two weeks time. Does anyone know any of the routes they take you on? I have a friend who went from the centre towards Pinehill School and then towards Mitre 10 Mega and back. I know there's more than one route. Anyone done them? Do the others include the motorway?

Also, has anyone got advice for the hazard part? I think I'd be ok identifying hazards... it's just saying what I'm doing/what I'd do about them that's hard to verbalise. I mean surely a lot of the time you're just "watching" the hazards eg. car waiting to pull out of side road. 

Any serious answers appreciated smile

Serious answer.
I have had bad personal level experiences at that place.
Failed twice one due to judgement of tester and another cause i forgot to indicate.
Generally the routes are hilly browns bay area then up the 80Kph zone next to the motorway. Really have have about 20 routes if not more. One of them showed me the route list.

Ensure its not at peak times :-p Last thing you want is to be stuck at an intersection for ages and then be told "you took to long to make your move" - had it happen to me years ago.....  I was "So you'd rather I had an accident ?"

Almost happened to me but i got out after 4 minutes of waiting for some ahole to accelerate up my rear and honked.

There are a number of routes for each testing site.  One recommendation is to have 1 or 2 lessons with a driver trainer in the area as they know the routes and can skill you up on the parts to look out for.

Definitely this and do it a couple of days out if you can. You'll get a nice refresher and a chance to run through the courses. I did it for my licence years ago in Orewa. In fact, I recommend going there. A bit less traffic.

Since you already booked it there...
I'd say just take the refresher locally and practice driving calling all "moving" hazards ALL the time till the test.
U just redid my full licence to get a P endorsement, and the tester basically told me the hazard ID is really a 'load' testing process. Not a huge issue if you miss noticing the random cat on a wall, but when stressing about IDing hazards, do you forget to indicate/change gear/ shoulder check (etc) correctly, or are those now 'automatic' even when "stressing" talking about hazards and driving (like normal drivers who need to drive safely and be able to maintain conversations with passengers)

And if this doesn't work out... Beat tip is to retest somewhere more rural and swap familiarity with environ for lack of traffic?

I feel for you kids these days. My test consisted of a bit of a drive round the block, a reverse and a hill start on a mild slope.
He then said, who taught you? Boyfriend? When I said yes, he said, yeah, you're a bit fast then passed me.

If it helps, I know they watch every move now, you have to ensure the car is right first, mirrors, seats, seatbelt,  all that.
Then watch for hazards (everything on side of road as well as main part of road, remember every little bit, indicating and stuff, as well as being in the middle of your lane, and stuff.

Pretty intense to all at once with someone watching but do some practices first with an older person.....get you used to the picky bits.  Your mother would probably be ideal, nag, nag....

^^The upside to OP sitting the full now if it's a 15min test since the restricted has been made so much harder.

Go to the NZTA site, you can get the pdf's on what they access you on and study/work from that list

Thanks for the replies. I went for one of those mock tests today. It was quite interesting - he took me through two of the test routes. The thing that threw me was indicating and doing a shoulder check when "diverging" ie. driving around a parked car so you have to cross the centre line or move out like a metre or something (and then indicating left and checking over your other shoulder afterwards.)

Congratulations!  Now go out and buy a high powered turbo charged car and drive it like you stole it.

Remember...If the light is "RED" and everybody is still standing still, it's OK to continue because they will likely see you are in a hurry and pospone their launch.  "ORANGE" light means "second gear" and when a light goes green from red you have to launch it like a GTR or the guy behind you will beep at you in order to encourage normal Auckland behavior.

We will touch on more advanced techniques like crossing center lines later once you have mastered the pedestrian/cyclist point system.

Have fun!  But seriously, congratulations haha! :)

Missing:

The "indicator feint" - indicate left and turn right....
"Stop-Go-Stop" - Approach lights, they turn orange, tap your brakes, then release and roll forward 2m , then slam on brakes.  Hold on. Person behind will hit you or swerve around you into oncoming traffic.
"Stopabout" - proceed onto Aucklands busiest roundabout (Greenlane) , then stop part way round because you missed the exit you needed. Bonus points if you try reversing back to you exit. Triple points if you do this during rush hour. I'll buy you a beer if you do this during rush hour AND succeed.
