I have been doing a lot of family tree stuff in the past year. I use the free software for myheritage.com called Family Tree Builder. You can sync it with an online tree with myheritage, up to 250 people for free. Alternatively you can upload it to ancestry.com but the same number of persons restrictions apply.

Most hardcore genealogists swear by Legacy though, I think there is a free version of that too.

If you need any tips and tricks for searching your family tree, dont hesitate to ask. I have learnt so much in the past year, there are plenty of ways to research you family without having to pay for ancestry and the likes.
