I had heard that they were also doing a lot of online only specials which they weren't offering to people who went into their stores. Maybe they wll eventually become an online only retailer, because most of what they sell, could be online only these days.

I stopped taking Dick Smith stores seriously after the manager of the Palmerston North store told me that the CGA only requires them to follow up faults with the manufacturer, as this is the reasonable life expectancy of the product. yell

(After that, I flat out asked if that means that they expected, say, a TV with a one year warranty to only last one year, and if he thought that was acceptable. He said yes.)

Last time I went there I ended up have an argument with the sales person over whether rechargeable alkalines existed or not. She kept insisting I was actually looking for NiMH batteries and that there's no such thing as rechargeable alkaline batteries, I tried to explain to her that they've been around for about 30 years but she was having none of it, I ended up just walking out.

I get their email and am now getting 1, sometimes 2 every day with deals - usually only good for that day, and mostly online only.

Looks like they are pushing that channel pretty hard, but they have had some good deals. I got a Logitech Harmony 650 for $39 with free delivery and a D-Link Wifi security camera for $29 and free delivery in the last month or two.

Here in Oz, under Woolworths ownership they were closing stores, now they are opening more.

Bond + Bond, Norman Ross, The Good Guys have all exited the market. Will Dick Smith follow? I don't know.

linw: I've been wondering about the continuous stream of emails as well. Seems a bit suspicious. Bit tiresome as well.

Bond and bond didn't really, it was just a brand and tied to Noelleemings, and after it was purchased by the warehouse, it was phased out.  Up until quite recently it still existed online to clear old stock.

Shame really.  You could haggle with their salesmen.  :)

Norman Ross was just Harvey Normans "end of lines" outlet store so not really left either just dispensed with.

I thought it was something like that with them. It is a bit like LV Martins and Smiths city, they are owned by the same company and often next door to one another. So the loss of the 'brands results in a  bit of a loss of competition, but it is more a consolidation of brands. At some stage I can see it going the other way, and there being less competition, as these things go in cycles.

I think Smith City should just consolidate their business, it would improve the bottom line.

LV martins probably has a better name and brand loyality in Wellingotn. Smiths city was in Wellington  in the 1990's and then disappeared, but came back about 5 years ago, so people are perhaps not so familar with that brand up here.

After receiving one of these "Today Only" online deals recently, I decided to order. I clicked on the graphics in the email that took me to their website and as expected same deal shown. I placed the items in my cart and price was different. I called their support number and the queue message said I was "next to be answered". I gave up after 25 minutes as I was calling during my lunchbreak from my workplace. I tried again later but again spent 15 minutes in the "next to be answered" queue before I hung up. I placed the online order later that night and then followed up immediately with email. The next day I called them again. Spent 30 minutes in the "next to be answered" queue before they answered. Explained my issue, and they said somebody would call me back within a few hours. That evening I get automated email to say order has been shipped.

I called next day. 20 minutes in the "next to be answered" queue. They said their system doesn't show the pricing I was quoting to them. They asked me to forward them the offer I received. I did that whilst on the phone, so got the acknowledgement they received the email. She said somebody would call me back.

Next day the order arrives, but no call back from them that day. I call them a day later. Again queue message says I am "next to be answered". Whilst waiting I grab my cellphone and call them. Message on that phone too says "I am next to be answered". Get my wife to also call the number. She too gets "next to be answered" message. So 3 concurrent calls and all say "next to be answered"...hmmmmm

Call finally answered after 30 minutes and took around 20 minutes to finally sort it, with them agreeing to credit the difference.

Happy that they finally honoured the deal, but getting there was a slog.

That amount of your life wasted, probably voided any saving you made. Sounds like poor service overall.
