Hi all.

A couple of friends and I are planning to go down to Lake Tekapo to check out the Aoraki Mackenzie Dark Sky Reserve. We are there for 2 nights. Just wondering if anyone has been there before and what sort of activities you would recommend for a few guys to enjoy (hiking, outdoor activities, nightlight etc). We are planning to go down to the observatory on one of the nights.

We also get a day in Christchurch as well - pretty much a driving tour for a few hours. Any recommendations would be appreciated! Going over the labour day weekend.

Yes the Mount Cook Reserve thing is very good.

The guided astronomy Big Sky trips are well worth it.

If you can track it down, the grandson (I think) of Bill Hamilton of Hamilton Jet fame does trips on the lake in an original jet boat. The boats were developed on Irishman Creek station up there.

Also the Helicopter Line sightseeing flights from Glentanner Field are well worth a go.

If the Snow Tubing is still running at tekapo springs that is pretty fun to do for a day. You can buy pass's just for the snow tubing, ice skating, hot pools or any combination of the 3. Not too expensive either if I remember correctly.

The drive up the mountain for a coffee is worth it, the view from up there aint half bad either.
