KiwiNZ: The deal the Govt has for these Limos means they get them for a very very good price, better than they could buy Toyotas for.

Just out of curiosity - what Toyota's cost close to $90K? (with the exception of the Landcruiser)

It's not just the up front cost, it's the whole "deal" which includes all sorts of other things.

If I recall correctly one year BMW came up with the best package to replace the Police fleet.  Cheaper, better cars, fully kitted out, the works.  They didn't get the contract because it wouldn't have been a good 'look' for Police to be driving around in Beemers.  So they went with the more expensive inferior model (I think Ford had the deal back then).

As you say when considering the whole of life package things may not always be as they seem.

We had the same exact thing happen at one company I worked at in the UK.

Many of the 5000 staff had company cars because we had to get around to site meetings in remote locations and so on. BMW came up cheapest but on political grounds Rover got the contract!

It's amazing how cheap European cars are in Europe to own (not the new car price, but the overall owning)

I used to take my Citroen to France for the day when it needed servicing - it was cheaper than doing it in the UK and I got to have lunch in France and go shopping to boot!

joker97: I read somewhere that the police pay full RRP for each and every one of their holdens ... is that true

(and a cop told me they are uninsurable - not sure if warranty even applies! I presume it does for the 100,000ks which is like 1 year or something, if you're in a rural area!)

Police vehicles are leased.

Why DO they use those awful Holdens?

Surely BMW's or something would be cheaper for them too?

The only exports under the Holden badge were to NZ.    No one else would touch them .

Incorrect Holden exported extensively to South America, Africa and the Middle East, some model were also exported to the US

Holden are still exporting to the US with the Chevy SS being made in Oz.

The VE Commodore was also sold as the Pontiac G8, Chevy Omega and Chevy Lumina, and previous Commodores under various GM brands.

My point was that they don't export under the Holden badge because no one will buy them..

Umm ... it's the same company, argument is moot ... Holden is GM in australia/NZ, no point creating a competition when heritage already exists in those country.

why we have chevy in australia i don't know. maybe because of the corvette being such a legend, but then they didn't sell corvettes in Oz before next year

I really wish GM would tidy up their branding. If you buy a 'Holden' you don't really know whether you're getting an Opel, a Daewoo, a Chevrolet, a Suzuki, an Isuzu....

They badge them differently for different markets because GM usually has 'local' brandnames they market.
Vauxhall in the UK, Opel in Europe, Chevrolet elsewhere.
Its just their idea on marketing.

No - people would wonder what this 'Holden' is - not a reflection on whether the car is good or bad.
Personally I reckon they would be better to have a GM 'brand' and local model names perhaps - but they do what they do.

I cant see why the government shouldnt buy a fleet of fuel efficient and reliable cars - my vote is Camry Hybrids.
If they are good enough for taxi drivers then they are good enough for our politicians.
They can buy the PM a Lexus Hybrid if he wants something extra flash.

There is a lot of safety features and other abilities Camry's simply don't have. Granted they are as reliable as sunrise but they just don't cut it for driving political leaders about.

Safety? - Yes - I guess you are right. A 5 star ANCAP rating is not good enough is it.
What am I thinking

AFAIK, NZ does not have the armoured versions of the cars like Australia have ordered, which are around $500k+ each. I believe we just have the run of the mill 7-series. More luxurious than a Camry? Certainly. Safer? I doubt it.

You need to think not family car and family car driving, think defensive and offensive driving etc. Things like run flats are just one example.
