Sideface: So Smith could hide out in Brazil whilst living on his NZ student accommodation allowance undecided

Good trade off, $90k/year of tax dollars to feed and house him here, or let him keep his $26k and just make sure he don't get back into NZ.

What happens next ...

http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/63627340/what-happens-next-for-prison-escapee-phillip-smith

Here is what's in store for Smith upon his return:

He is expected to arrive at Auckland International Airport at 4am on Saturday following a 13-hour flight from Santiago, Chile.
He will appear in the Auckland District Court on either Saturday or Monday morning, charged with escaping from Spring Hill Prison while in custody for murder.
From there he will be taken to the maximum security wing at Auckland Prison at Paremoremo.

Perhaps he'd like to share a cell with Graeme Burton?

Tony Elllis, his lawyer:

"The pressing issue is the state of his mental health.

"He is coming back to a life sentence, when he thought he might be free forever."

MY HEART BLEEDS FOR HIM WE SHOULD TOTALLY LET HIM GO, APOLOGISE, AND GIVE HIM A NICE BIG HOUSE IN REMUERA WITH A SPA POOL AND A PORSCHE TO HELP HIM FEEL BETTER.

I am more concerned about the mental health of the people who let him go.

His mental health? What about the life sentences he inflicted on his victims? He has lost every right of a human being and should be treated lower than the worms that eat the scum at the bottom of the waste pool.

"I would imagine that having successfully escaped and then being captured and then, worse still, being brought back to New Zealand, he could be in quite a poor state."

Worse, still?

Read his whole quote; it makes sense. He says the only effect of charging him with escaping custody would be another costly trial which would result in him not being eligible for parole for a further 5 years. But, no parole board in the country is ever going to approve parole for him ever again anyway, so it would simply be a waste of money. He's going to die in jail.

Smith is serving a "life sentence".
This is NOT the same thing as "for the term of his natural life" (unfortunately).
