All of McDonald's throughout NZ have no eftpos. We got caught out an hour ago. 2 things.

1. Realized we never carry any cash anymore and must get some for emergency's (no not McDonald's)

2. Must be costing them an absolute fortune in lost sales.

Was still down half hour ago.

Absolutly hopeless and not the first time it has happened.

I also thought chip cards were supposed to allow for offline use for this exact situation. Clearly maccas have far too much money to be able to turn half a days trade away unless they still have cash.

I had to break my 100 I carry to use at countdown for small purchases due to their paywave policy.

Thats why I try the card, try the card. Say "Oh its still broken. Here, I will pay with cash instead" and then give them a hundy just to make them have to count the change out, then I check it. Really Really slowly.

Yeah. lucky I did carry emergency cash as always but just $20 only. One Queen is more than enough to survive for a short emergency. ;)

They should not be losing any sales, just process the transaction manually, a but of a pain for both users but can be done.
Even if the terminal is dead you can use the old zip zap machine to process the eftpos transaction.
If I recall as part of your merchant agreement you have to have one.

Not anymore, the terminal is supposed to do it all for you on the terminal. I think you can even do a phone authorisation for an offline transaction on the terminal.

In the past when McD's have had outages their machines let you swipe and print a receipt to sign, then the transaction is processed later. Wonder why that isn't working today>

EOV mode allows terminals to store offline transactions. Whether a retailer supports this or not will depend on their merchant agreement. Large retailers such as supermarkets and service stations do, the fact McDonalds don't is really surprising.

It sounds like they ran all their EFTPOS through a single server and something went wrong. There has been some speculation earlier it was a Vodafone issue, but that may just be related to them being a Vodafone customer.

I just bought a shake with a visa debit/eftpos card with no troubles. I had to sign, does this mean it was actually processed through the visa network?

I imagine most people these days would use a visa debit rather than a plain eftpos card? Maybe not.

I was at the drivethru both times today because why go into one that has a drivethru, perhaps they just dont want to do the signing thing on the drivethru because more hassle.

Because it is the poor checkout workers fault that there is a terrible system implemented, but hey make their day terrible to make yourself feel better.
