2. Must be costing them an absolute fortune in lost sales.

Aren't the branches ran as franchises? So it's the local guy who takes the biggest hit, and its not his fault.

This came up in an article once on Bloomberg on how two McDonald's opened side by side (not across the road) and this was because one was owned and another was franchised.

Only BK is franchised out completely (or near)

While Burger King operate a franchise model (ie each country is franchised), all sites in NZ are not individually franchised, and all stores owned by the private equity company that owns the master franchise.

Correct however I think there are approx 2 NZ stores which are privately owned, One is the one by the airport, The other I cant remember which, Usually can spot them with those "This deal is not available in this store" lines.

Isn't that just because of the high rent charged for a store in the airport, hence they can't offer the cheapest offers with such high costs

Don't think so, I worked for BK back in 2010 or 2011 for a very short time and I remember being told that there where 2 privately owned franchises and something to do with the airport was one of them, Suspect it may actually be one close to but not in the airport but not 100%. I didn't actually know there was one in the airport until last week on my way to Aus.

I think the others are owned by the Antares restaurant group who are the primary franchisee for NZ.

Perpetually undecided.

Personally I am more disturbed by the fact that so many people still eat McDonalds "food".

The ones at Auckland airport are operated by some overseas company called HMS Host. Found that out after checking my bank statement and wondering WTF is HMS host? Until I figured out that is was them who operated that BK.

I used to eat alot of "Mc Donalds" type of food. Then I discovered Muscle Chow. I always order the 12 meals per week plan with the double meat option. They cook and deliver daily. And they leave the meals in an old fridge I have plugged in outside my house. So They are always fresh. And even more convenient than takeaways. And far far healthier as well. I will probably switch to the 18 meal per week option soon.

Well they must do, or there wouldn't be 161 of their "restaurants" in NZ.

(Confession: I eat that crap too.)

Edited to the correct number of maccas burger joints in NZ.

I'll only eat McD/BK/KFC etc when I am on holiday, either inside NZ or outside
Two trips away for work at the end of last year had me trying out Carls Jr and Wendys and lets just say the diet went out the window (no Carls or Wendys in Dunedin)

Er, on topic. Wasn't affected by the outage

Banana?

Off topic on the EFTPOS thing, but I did notice that McDonalds Balmoral has Build Your Own Burger now - flash. Will try it this week if their EFTPOS is working.
