Hey guys,

sorry if this has been covered before,

I really enjoy paywave but some retailers don't have it and that annoys me.

just because they dont like it, everyone that wants to use it is out of luck...

does anyone know when paywave/paypass will be mandatory on all pay machines?

i like it because its quick and in my eyes more secure because i dont have to hand my card to a stranger

I sense this thread will just end up with a pro-contactless and people who resent contactless.

A close source informs me that contactless cards have differing fee structures, and sky high rentals for the payment terminals, given NZ has smaller pop up stores and retailers, it is unlikely they will jump on board anytime soon. While not really the merchant's fault, neither is the Credit Card companies doing anything to support adoption of contactless.

Perhaps choose your retailers/merchants where possible/convenient - Refuse to support any retailer that does not take cards or slap surcharge for paying by cards. (e.g. Uber vs taxis). Fast food - choose McDonalds/Subway over your local takeway - same with bars.

For me, if the place takes cash/eftpos only, I'd think twice before I walk in.

It's up to the retailer what form of payment they are willing to take.

They don't have to take cheques, accept credit cards (some brands or any at all), or even offer EFTPOS if they don't want to*.

Regardless of whether you are pro or anti contactless payments, it's up to the vendor. I can't see the banks, government or anyone else "mandating" a payment method they don't want for a transaction.

* Yes, I know cash is legal tender. That doesn't actually mean that a retailer has to accept it in a transaction they don't want to execute. It does mean that if you owe someone money, and offer legal tender in settlement, they have to accept it.

You have to remember that paywave is relatively new technology, merchants will start accepting it when they update their terminals.
Some people lease their terminals and change them every three years, some own them and will change them when they are forced to.
As a merchant I believe you have to pay extra to have the functionality on your terminal/

Personally I think paywave has its place, I am not anti contact less transactions, I however don't like it, I like to be able to select what account something comes from, I have had three accounts loaded on my credit card for years, now I have to go back to two cards if I want to pay for something from my personal or Joint account.

When you say relatively new, do you mean here? I believe it was first offered in the US in 1997..and the UK in 2008.

I only recall it being used for visa / MasterCard transactions in New Zealand for the past couple of years, the technology itself is not new, just the application in this iteration is new.

Hopefully it will never be mandatory. All your eggs in one basket? No thanks.

Which is not a good way to support your local high-street small shop that is already being squeezed by the big-box stores.

Yeah, that's a bit harsh.

Places with terminals that take 45 seconds to process a transaction, on the other hand...

Once they have a Bank Debit card compatible option, then I think it will take off more. At the moment it is only credit card transactions, so attracts applicable fees.

To me this is a total non-issue.
If a shop has the right goods at the right price, and will take my cash card or credit card, I am a happy camper. smile

Ok,

so there is no definite timeframe on a requirement.

im just going to boycott any retailer that has a contactless ready terminal that chooses to not activate the contactless feature.

hopefully that will get them to turn it on...
