It seems daily that Boko Haram is kidnapping, raping, burning alive, or otherwise torturing people, at least most of whom seem fairly innocent to me, especially all the hundreds of children or when the burn down whole villages. More than 5000 people have been killed in the last few years.

These are particularly hideous ways to kill people in my opinion, unnecessarily cruel and painful.

I believe a global effort is required to put them down, I don't have an issue with NZ sending troops either in a Military or support role (I prefer support).

I don't think it's reasonable for any country to take a hands off approach.

It seems to be a particularly evil group. I am unsure their true motives?

Not enough oil...

j/k

But unfortunately, that's probably the real reason.

We do not have the military resources or man power to go to both Iraq and Nigeria

I probably should've said " not enough easy oil, as there are africans with guns that aren't ruled by friendly saudi kings etc."

So in your opinion which country should we help out with military support? They both burn people alive, so what is worse in your opinion: Be-headings or hundreds of children being kidnapped, raped and murdered?

I agree that Boko Haram has to be dealt with. As I said in the ISIS thread, we would be better off providing resources to replace forces stationed elsewhere to allow those counties to provide assets. eg using TeKaha and TeMana to release either US or GB Naval units.

Touche.

It is ironic that ISIS get most of the media attention. I guess a difference is that ISIS have blatantly waged war on the west, recruit westerners and want to take the war to places like Europe, Australia etc...

I'm not sure of Boko Haram have the same intentions or if they are an isolated African problem.

Both should be stopped.

Ohhhhhhhhh, Boko, right, I wondered why Procol Harum had turned evil and moved to Nigeria. Must get a hearing test.

Dunno if they'd be allowed in Africa after "A Whiter Shade of Pale"... Locals might think they're trying to change the place.

I suppose I could say that the British might have quashed this if the Empire was still alive and well in Africa.

Sadly everyone decided letting the lunatics run the asylum would somehow be better.....

Your perspective of current world events seems to be so terribly coloured by your almost cute (if it wasn't so worrying!) romanticised view of the Days of The Great Empire. I know there'll be no use arguing over your view of history, as I'd imagine you'll hold on desperately to this until the ship has finally sunk.

I've managed to bite my metaphorical tongue over so many of your posts over the years that are based on the same old-fashioned imperialist conservatism, due to the risk of breaching the site's FUG, but to mix my metaphors this is the one that broke the camel's back! Sometimes, though, I just wonder if you say these things to poke the borax, and in fact you're secretly a Green-voting hippy??

The foundations of a lot of these issues are a legacy of European colonial policy

Not at all. Why would I be? Which country would you rather live in? The Zimbabwe of today or the Rhodesia that came before, with roads, schools, hospitals, plenty of food, a reasonably uncorrupt police force (in comparison) etc?
