Seven Sharp - aprx. 500,000 viewers
Campbell Live - aprx. 150,000 viewers

Sad.

"In the last week of March, when Campbell Live celebrated a decade on air, it also saw some of the worst ratings in its history. According to analysis by throng.co.nz, it averaged an audience of 154,576 per night for that week - a week in which Seven Sharp exceeded 500,000 viewers for the first time."

No doubt Campbell Live will be replaced by either Jono & Ben, the 7 Days team, or any combination thereof. TV3 does comedy very well, but this has coexisted alongside great news and current affairs as well. It will be a real pity if (correction: when) the two are merged for 'ratings' effect. Each to their own, as long as I can opt out for quality pickings offshore.

Could cope with 7 Days

I find this to be profoundly depressing news. I have already turned my back on the wasteland that is New Zealand FTA television, but John Campbell was the only one doing any serious investigative journalism at all. If there is no room in this country for that kind of programming, it says something very disturbing about us all.

It keeps getting worse - last night's Campbell Live was the worst one that I've ever seen - dumbed down to be as much like Seven Sharp as possible - with John Campbell looking embarrassed and doing as little as possible.
Lots of "human interest" trivia - a geriatric surfer, an animal friendship story, a pizza delivery story - interspersed with ads for Jon and Ben (a subtle hint?)

The writing is on the wall.

I refuse to believe that the decision isn't politically influenced - even if indirectly. While that may not be from direct or implied threat from politicians or political parties, reporting on social issues is always "political", commercial entities (advertisers) exert editorial influence, right-wing lobby groups are very quick to respond to what they see as "bias".
The Sage of Omaha sums it up nicely "Class warfare is going on, and our side is winning!"

It's not political as far as I can see, its financial. The issue is that it isn't rating nearly as well as it used to and, when it's being run on a TV channel that has a business model based on selling eyeballs to advertisers, that's a bit of a problem.

Personally, it must be 6-7 months since I have seen an episode. Never really liked it, can't really tolerate the incessant ads on FTA TV anyway, and I won't miss it.

That's why I record everything and skip thru the ads unless you think ad skipping is theft as some TV networks think..

So do I. But lately it has to be something I really want to see. I even find it irritating to have to reach for the remote and zap through ads every 6-7 minutes now. That, and the dearth of any actual good content, means that I'm probably at around 1-2 hours of FTA TV a week - and 50 minutes of that was accounted for by Top Gear (RIP). Essentially the same reason I'm over Sky - ads on too many channels for me to want to keep paying.

When I finally get around to my long planned HTPC build I will probably experiment with Comskip to automate ad removal. But between other demands on my time, and so little worth watching, its more a case of ..... Meh (shrugs).
