My POS macbook pro and its POS power adapter has split (as the all seem to) and decided it doesnt like shrink wrap fixes anymore and just wont work

Is it possible to get a 3rd party power supply rather than paying the $120 apple dollars for their design flawed product?

The 3rd party ones are rubbish. Mostly they die from flawed treatment rather than flawed design.

depends on how much you value your product. don't care - third party, poor quality, may or may not work properly, may or may not die prematurely. very important - buy genuine. it's just that third party ones are built very poorly. a bit like DIY vs professional.

i get your point, could blow the PSU etc.

but to be honest nothing could be built with poorer quality than apple magsafe power supplies. the thing was barely ever moved from its desk and still managed to fray like the prior T bar magsafe macbook pro.

completely gone off apple after my imac died a half year out of warranty.

i use to think of apple as the Lada of computers, clunky and ugly, but appreciated their CAD and photoshop capabilities. now PC has caught up im going to build a dual boot desktop.

but still need to replace this magsafe to sell the POS. if only they spent less time marketing other peoples ideas as their own :-p and more on QA

Did you get it repaired?
Apple are actually pretty good and probably would have repaired that under NZ consumer law even if you didn't buy from them directly.

Its like they were genius to figure out magnetic connection are a great idea but too stupid to understand that moulded power plugs are around for a reason.

You can usually purchase refurbished or good second-hand adapters from OWC, which may suit you. BTW, I've got a 2007 MacBook Pro with a MagSafe power adapter that has been moved and used a lot - it still looks like new. Knowing that the power adapters on most things are fragile I have always been careful not to coil it tightly, etc.

Hmm here you are saying that the design is flawed yet I still have my original charger from one of the first Macbook Pros going fine for me with my current macbook.
Could it be a user issue?

this is the 3rd one, and not user, its used as a desktop. the fact they got sued over the t plug ones doesnt tell you anything when the material is the same. sigh.

cheers clicknz, i presume they are on the net. would rather have a genuine one.

i might give it to my nan, at least apples are nan proof for operating.

I have the same problem on my power adapter.  That rubbery coating disintegrates after approx 18months.

I purchased a 3rd party power supply from TradeMe and it was sh*t, it died within months of purchasing.  I'm just happy it didn't fry my macbook.

I'm now onto my 3rd Apple power supply and it's starting to fray as well.

My macbook is 5 1/2 years old.

I presume thats a T bar connector Mal?

yep its the material at fault at how it connects.

Id have some understanding if i was travelling with the lappy but it just sits there. Plus it has the common fan over running issue, which was replaced under warranty but has come back. Never again.

Not when I can build a mac of better quality.

haha thats quite the fix.

i used heat shrink on mine but the material just became brittle as you know and eventually its just stopped charging. mines at the L mag end and the power box end.

dont you hate it when ignorant people think you dont take care of your gear just because theirs hasnt broken. let alone that its a common problem.

much cheaper to get a reconditioned one from the US, approx $30 US plus shipping. 6 month warranty.
