Always get an official Apple charger.  You're asking for a world of hurt if you don't.  At the least your Mac will under perform.  At worst you'll damage the components or battery.

You can definitely get cheaper than retail though.  I've bought a few 2nd hand or refurbished ones from eBay before with no issues.

tdgeek:
clicknz: You can usually purchase refurbished or good second-hand adapters from OWC, which may suit you. BTW, I've got a 2007 MacBook Pro with a MagSafe power adapter that has been moved and used a lot - it still looks like new. Knowing that the power adapters on most things are fragile I have always been careful not to coil it tightly, etc.

You know that, I know that, wish my 16yo daughter would know that

Weird, I have found teenage kids know everything..... well according to them anyway.

TeaLeaf:
dont you hate it when ignorant people think you dont take care of your gear just because theirs hasnt broken. let alone that its a common problem.

It's probably more likely to help add balance for others looking at the thread i.e. so people can look at this thread and see that some MBP owners have had no problems with their machines or power adapters instead of assuming that 100% of Apple power adapters will fail.

Cheers,
Mike

It's the same deal with Apple 30 pin connectors. Some at work used to go through them like I eat hot meals, others inc myself have never had an issue with one!

heaps of people dont have any issue, but they are renowned for perishing for no apparent reason. perhaps they make the majority on a friday. :-)

where can i take my mackbook pro to get some charge into it to check the battery and or check that another cable lights up on it? i was thinking of trying a pram and slc to see if it resolves the issue.
